Many years ago, in a book or magazine was the instructions to the handling of the Ball and Vase using sleight-of-hand (without the shell). I am hoping that someone can lead me to a source where I may learn the handling of this effect.
Thank you everyone at the Magic Café' for all of the great advice and help that myself and others have recieved here at this GREAT website. Iven

You're likely thinking of Mike Gallo's wonderful routine that appeared in Richard's Almanac from Kaufman and Greenberg. It can be found in The Collected Almanac, widely available (if you need more specific info PM me).

I know that Marlo had a ball vase routine, written up in "Arcade Dreams," but I don't recall the details.
I developed a routine using a ball vase and crocheted balls, with no gimmick, but I'm not willing to spill the beans. I instead recommend you read the literature, not just on Ball Vase but on Cups/Chop Cups/Bowl work in general, to get an idea of what you can do. |

Althought the gaff is used, there's a routine by Mike Skinner in his book "Intimate Magic". I'm not sure if it's in any of his other books.
A friend of mine owned a magic shop, years ago. He didn't have any ideas for a routine for the ball vase, so he didn't know how to sell them. I told him to give me a few minutes and I'd come up with a routine. The routine was based on Chop Cup routines and he nearly doubled the price on the ball vases, after seeing the routine. We even sold a few of them that day. |

One of Michael Skinner's video has a ball vase routine. But I can't rememeber the name of that tape.

I was working a trade show for AKZO in San Antonio several years ago. The company had bought a bunch of magic shop giveaways to hand out to the customers. Among the "prizes" were some ball and vase outfits. I cadged two of them which were identical in color, and I was ready to work. If you have that much, you can treat the top of the vase like you would a single cup, and you can load it like you would load a ball into a cup in a cup and ball routine. I think I have given out enough information now so that you can construct a good routine.

The Mike Skinner routine that is in the book is the same one that is on his video. You can still find both resources readily available.

Ed Marlo published a Ball and Vase Routine in Genii Magazine many years ago. I think it was the 1970's. He used 2 sets and an extra ball if remember correctly.

Spellbinder sells this routine and more at the Magic Nook. I have it, and it explains the ball and vase, the vase and eggs and much more. I believe the cost was $5 or so as a download, many pages and many photos.

I made up a routine a while ago.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E392qyX__zw Here is proof. Well, you can see the basic handling here. But, I assume that adding a shell can make the whole thing much more deceptive. |

The real fun with this type of routine is when you perform it for people who "know how it is done."

Roland;
Cute routine! You have come up with several interesting moves. A little more practice and balls 6mm smaller in diameter would help. Those balls seem to be at the limit of your palming capabilities. I like the routine. Please try things with a smaller ball set. Nice effort. Thanks for sharing. MR

By the way, Mike Gallo's excellent routine is on DVD as well. To the simple travel of the ball, he also added color changes and several other effects making it a real masterpiece. I've always thought that it would be a nice introduction to present the prop as a souvenir from youth times and to perform the routine as if to remind the effect to the spectators, as they are still holding the shell part... The Marlo routine is the only one I don't remember. It would be nice to get precise references about it.

Iven, here is the link to Professor Spellbinder's ebook. It is called Hansen egg cup, and besides this routine, it has Skinner's routine with a ball and vase and a brief explanation on Gallo's move, and a historic description of the ball and vase prop. All of these for $5 as a download.

I'm not familiar with any of the above handlings. But when I saw Bill's comment regarding two sets, it occurred to me that switching in a base with a glued gaff could make a solid kicker.

I realize this is an old topic recently resurrected, but I haven't seen Charlie Frye's name mentioned. He has a great "no shell" ball vase routine in one of his Eccentricks DVD's.
