Hello Bill
I cannot trace the full reference on the book that you mentioned on the David Solomon Ball and vase routine

Can you give me a bit more details (year, publisher...)?

Minor correction:

Salomon, David: Presentations for the Storyteller © The Eye of Al-Hazred

should read

Solomon, Ed: Presentations for the Storyteller, © 2001-2008 The Eye of Alhazred Revisited.

I apologize for the error I made in the title of the routine. I was doing that from memory. I re-checked that title.

The work is a compilation of smaller books that Ed Solomon of San Antonio put together in 2008. I was the editor. Ed and I published it together, basically. The final work was done in my home right after hurricane Ike came through. A friend of mine loaned me a gasoline powered generator. In the morning, we would use it to cook our breakfast and heat our coffee. Afterwards, I would power up the computer and work on the book.

We had a horrible deadline. The book needed to be in the hands of the people putting on the ICBM gathering up East. They were honoring Ed Solomon, and he needed to have about 50 copies of the book. I promised him the book would be ready.

Then the hurricane hit, and we were without electricity for 8 days. I hate to break promises, so I borrowed that generator, and finished the book. As soon as the power was back on, I uploaded the copy to Lulu.com and had two paperback copies sent to us. We made all the corrections, then published the book in hardback. The final copies reached their destination the week before that gathering took place.

WHEW!!!!

Loved the story: it very much sounds like what you would do (and, please, take this as a compliment)

I'll recheck on Lulu.com to try and buy the book.

It should occur to magicians that the simplicity of the prop is not a hindrance for good magic with the cups and balls. Someone, using Mike Gallo's or Michael Skinner's technique could fool the heck out of us by performing with two hands and balls of different colors René Lavand's Breadcrumbs: it's a different handling but not much of a different plot design than Milt Kort's Chromo-Spheres. Having a very nice wooden ball and vase prop then is only for the audience to grant psychological value to a great routine.

I know that Bob Olsen's routine was published either in the Linking Ring or in Genii years back. Can someone write the full reference down?

Same request for the same magazines with David Britland's routine

As usual Bill Palmer's routine is more precious than we immediately realize for the Morisson Pill Box had two [ instead of a simple insert: these two ball’s [ fit perfectly into the top and bottom of the vase and, when the finial is pushed, they fit into each other forming a single ball for production at the end

I found a ball and vase routine by Duraty that has a LIQUID FINISH. Superb.
I'm translating his French Magic Books on close up into English because he is so creative that it would be a shame not to spread the ideas.

Nice.
Would you be able to distribute this?

While viewing various ball and vase clips on Youtube, several performers visibly produced the different colored ball from their lap. This was very disturbing.
No attention should ever be drawn to the lap IMHO.

You are correct that this prop has not been explored nearly enough.

I'll probably be up all night now trying to mix a liquid that matches the color of the ball. Smile

What Duraty does is to use a technique comparable to Mike Gallo but keeping the gimmick in so that water is kept in the vase when the cover is lifted and the vase turned over to release a finger palmed ball.
It's only at the end that he secretly takes the gimmick off with the cover and then pours the content (expected to be a ball) into a spectator's hand. It's very little water but the surprise is so strong that the quantity isn't what matters

That's nice, and it could be done with my little brass Solari vase.
Thank you.

Having not seen Duraty's version, I was imagining something very different for a larger vase.
