I'm curious about those of you who use Facebook to promote your magic business. Have you created a separate business page that you manage through your personal page. Or, do you just use your personal FB page to promote your magic business and mix your business and personal posts?

It is best to get two separate accounts. One business and one personal. If you are marketing thru your personal account, your friends will ignore you because they will look at it as spam.

Eric set up a page for me...
I just manage it through his account.

I found so many people I know on FB that
it would be overwhelming for me to have
a personal one. I'm not a fan of FB.
But soo many people are on it.

I still have a myspace at least.

ALWAYS have a separate page.

However, it is important to note that it is sometimes difficult to gain members without personally advocating the page. I find myself adding past clients, and then directing them to the page. I don't like allowing them to have access to my personal site, however I have edited it so much so that I at least HOPE they don't get offended by anything on it.

I have to be the voice of dissent for those advocating two pages.

Start, cultivate, and grow a personal page first. Connect with old friends, clients, and new friends first. Be personable. Let friends and fans in on your personal life, interact with them on a "Facebook personal" level. Share their links, share news items, share videos, share music. Social networking is first and foremost about being social. It's not all about your magic or comedy or ventriloquist act; it's about you connecting with people

Use the info section to list what you do, write a friendly yet informative, "About Me" section.

If you must promote, a simple status update with a link of venue, will suffice. "Just saying I'm gonna be at Crescent Theater Monday night at 7:00, if you're free stop by" If you must promote the gig heavily: apologize to regular friends, be self-deprecating..."I know you're sick about hearing it, but hey, it's my job...I'm at the Crescent on Monday. Don't Hate me, come to the show"

Facebook allows 5000 friends. Once you surpass 2000 or so, you could announce a "Business page" with an invite to "Like". Let folks know, schedules and times and guests and the like, will be posted on a regular basis. If you need to secure the page for namesake or URL early, that's fine; but let it be a placeholder at first.

We all know that illusions are the Magic for the audience, but in the realm of social networking, presenting your real authentic self is more magical for the magician (or any performer).

Not bragging, but corporations have paid me for similar advice. Don't hate me, hey...it was my job.

Until last year, I saw no need for a "Fan Page". One of my agents insisted I set one up. It felt kind of stupid to me at the time, but I did it. The fan page has surpassed the "friends" on my personal account. It allows me to keep my business and personal personas separate. There are still the interactions that Dave mentions, but the people who want to know where I will be or what I am doing, opt in with a "like". I now look at the Fan Page as a way to build a list of potential audience members. Its not about selling them my show, but keeping them interested in coming to see me again. Putting people in seats makes me more valuable to clients.

Thanks for the thoughs thus far. Great content. Well, my concern stems from my being a member of a Salsa dance community and I see lots of promoters constantly pushing their events and sometimes people grow weary of the self promotion. I don't want to follow that example. If I'm going to make an error, I'd rather be guilty of saying too little about my business among my personal friends. I hate the idea of being one of those magicians who won't shut up about his magic. On the other hand the # of "friends" that I have makes it tempting to do some gentle promoting on the personal page. The direction I'm leaning at present is to have my web site blog posts automatically repost to my business FB page and then make an occassional post on my personal page about my upcoming shows etc.

OK I have a different outlook on this...

I don't want my clients interacting with the guys I went to school with because they think they are funny

so I keep "CLIENTS" and Friends separate on facebook..

it also becomes a security issue.. I have a small child and the information about him that FAMILY shares back and forth does not need to goto the whole world..

Well, do you post or have friends tag your partying pics, or anything that doesn't 'jive' with your professional image?
If yes, separate... I've had FB since college so yeah, def. separate for me Smile in fact I don't even use my real name for my personal page.

Mike & Nash...I'm with ya. I'd prefer to keep the soccer mom's and others off of my personal page unless I know them outside of them being a client for some of the reasons you state.

Tom...I'll have to check out how to lure some of my personal page friends over to my business page with the "Like" that you mention.
