That clip of Jonathan doesn't really portray the response that he typically gets out of that bit. Part of it is that I think it was lost in translation (literally) when he gives the line. Keep in mind he's in another country. I think MagicGeorge is right on - the audience is unresponsive in general. The effect itself is amazing (I do it as my opener as well) but it needs a line like that to really hit home.
You can find other footage of him doing this (unfortunately I don't have any links at the moment) and it positively kills. He's the performer that sold this one for me.

With something so shocking as a bowling ball from a brief case or pad- what can you say? I think I would go up the same path as 'The Amazing Johnathan.' Figure that out seems perfect.
But I think FLOW wise- use the ball for something. I like the idea of switching it for a balloon and either letting the air out or even popping it. Any way you could use the ball would sell the reason it's there. Other things to produce? Basket ball. Pumpkin. (Funny if you drop it to show it is real. Ha!) A larger brief case? Small person. As far as idea for bowling ball effects... Make it float. Vanish. Juggle it. Card to bowling ball. Have a prediction in one of the finger holes. Give the ball to someone in the audience to hold and have the prediction in there, ready to go. Just shooting some ideas. Who knows where it may take you. Have fun. -jacob
I've been training these cards since they were small.

Thank you everyone for all of the suggestions! Saturday is coming fast! And am still unsure what to do or say after it's produced!

I say "I wonder if there's a bowling ball in this suitcase" Then I reveal the bowling bowl Then I say "Crikey, there is. Who'd have thought it?" Feel free to use my lines if you wish. I like to help fellow magicians. Thanks Andi |
