Hey all, I was wondering what everyone does as a solution to having health insurance (in America)? I'm not trying to get any sort of debate about the news laws up. My fiance has a preexisting condition it would be best if I could provide her with health insurance when we get married. I'm still starting everything up as far as making my magic a legitimate company. Any advice would be great. Thanks!

Many, even most, will no doubt respond that they benefit from their full-time-employed spouse's insurance. That's what I got when I asked this question a few years ago.

Now my spouse is retired, and I'm looking hard for an alternative. I hope some better answers pop up here (since the "Obamacare" improvements that promised to almost completely solve my problem is being slowed or stopped by a bunch of people who are thereby cutting their own throats and mine too). It doesn't help that, at age 61, I'm a walking collection of preexisting conditions.

I posted a summery and some conclusions online as a result of my earlier information-gathering - perhaps you'd like to see it HERE

Well, supposedly now that the new laws have passed, small business owners will be able to pool together to be able to make better health plans for themselves. Personally, the new laws have already helped me get back onto my parents health insurance (who wouldn't let me back on even though I'm a full time student). I'm pretty sure that through time, the new laws will show some promise, even though they may not be perfect.

As far as using a spouses health insurance, right now that's kind of the plan since she plans on becoming a teacher. Otherwise, I do know of a part time job that I could get that would provide great health insurance, but that's not really in my plans at this point. I'd love to hear other people's thoughts as well.

Some states have made it illegal to discriminate, based on pre-existing conditions, so that may be something to look into. When I need new insurance, I'll probably go with the nice rates on major medical policy, and invest a considerable amount to cover other medical expenses. I wouldn't be surprised if Public Citizen has some advice in one of their books or newsletters.
