I keep waiting for them to abolish coins; almost everything cost $1+ nowadays!

I don't get why there are no half dollars in circulation. Surely that would be a useful coin to have when dealIng with change. Anyone know why they're not used anymore? Simple - it's big and heavy. With things like cell phones, blackberries, ipods, and the such, and the increasing popularity of tighter fitting clothing, pocket management is becoming a greater issue. Most people I know don't bother to carry coins with them anymore... heck, a lot don't even carry cash. |

I like dollar size coins.
ikes perferably still somewhat common. in finger palm my hands don't look quite so cramped.and the bigger coin is flashy. |

FOr me, larger coins are far more visual, and fun to work with.

I agree with Motown... I prefer to use 1/2's as they are more commonly seen than dollar coins.

Two years ago I would have voted for halves, but I now prefer dollars (specifically, soft Morgans). Darn you, Todd Lassen!!

It also comes down to the effects I'm doing. In the hands or at the fingertips I prefer dollars, but most on the table work I prefer halves.

I think quarters are too small. Half dollars are are easier to palm and better for the spectator to see.

Bobo's Modern Coin Magic has practically no tricks with silver Dollars in it. The same goes for the Roth Videos and the Rubenstein ones. When did this big move to SIlver dollars take place?

I have both a shell and flipper set from Lassen in Morgan and Walker. I love the half because it's easier to palm
and conceal, but I LOVE my Morgan set because of the visibility! |

David's coins vanish so quickly I don't know how he keeps track!
He introduced me to Barbers. IF you don't have 'em, get 'em. They seem unreal after working with Kennedys. And I still love "the ladies"---Walking Libertys; the look and feel; but Barbers feel like you're playing with butter---silver butter. They just melt back and forth in David Neighbors' hands.

Half. Some specs are not that familiar with the dollar coin.

The halves are easier to work with and to hide but yeah the Morgys are much more visible and impactful IMHO. Got a couple of good sets to my name, even a set of Ikes w/a [ that I picked up from a Café Member in a trade. Never used them much though, as once you touch some good Morgans you don't go back.
But I also have some Barber halves as well that I bought a while back in Durango, Colorado, some years passed now. And yes as you guys say here, they are very soft indeed. Might have to pull them out again and clean them up a bit as they have discolored/darkened a bit on me from just sitting there. To the question here though, I guess I like them both for this & that. I have developed a good feel for both size coins over the years.

I think magicians too often underestimate how important this is to layfolk. That said, I haven't eliminated the half from my work, though I hope to. In any case, Jamie Schoolcraft makes quarter flippers and shells. If you're doing close-up, this is definitely the way to go. Jason

I love using the older coins. Its not about the prop, but how you present it! |

And if it's easier to hide half dollar coins, then quarters are basically invisible to begin with. (Hey, ever notice that no one does Tenkai Pennies with Pennies anymore??? I'm just sayin'). Seriously, I have used quarters but for me they are just too small even though people are much more likely to have them in their pocket for you to use. And I actually don't find a need to use spec's coins. It doesn't seem to matter much since I typically let them inspect the halves anyway. So I'm not sure they are getting any greater amazement simply because the coins are theirs but if it works for you, go with what works. But it's good to mix it up a bit and be able to use them all now and again. Again, I think the larger coins are much more visual and thus more impactful as to the magic, but as my grandpa useta say, "It's not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog."

^ I agree with you, MB!
Jason, IMO, the spectator is mainly interested that the coins are GENUINE. Most of this generation have never even seen a Kennedy half dollar! Hand one to someone in their twenties and they're completely fascinated! The magic just started! Also the old ploy about using "the coins my grandpa gave me" still works. People are fascinated with REAL coins, MONEY in general and, more than ever, SILVER. Layman don't suspect gaffs----especially with Barbers, Morgans or WLs. Heck, I was fooled by a large copper penny gaff! My opinions along with the practical aspect of handling larger coins per MB.
