How do you keep the wood in your illusions from warping over time? I keep mine in ATA cases, but I'm wondering if there is more I could do. I'm having one repainted and the painter said that some of the wood was warped.

Wood is kept from Warping by cutting and painting it as soon as you aquire the sheet of wood.
It is good to paint both sides, that way, one side pulls it out of shape and when the other side is painted, it pulls it back. Unfinished wood is stored usually flat on the floor with layers of newspaper between the wood sheets. If using large thick boards, these can be placed upright on end. Temperature and humidity is the cause of wood warping, as well as poor storage. That is why it is important to seal the wood with a sealer such as 'Bin' primer before painting the colors of choice. So if you store your illusions in ATA cases that keep them vertical or horizontal, but then expose them to extreme heat and humidity. They may still warp. As in the material is kept in the cases in a non temperature controlled garage. The shock of quickly exposing to hot or cold can cause the wood to warp. Lastly, it can be just the selection of wood, when choosing solid wood, if the board had a growth twist in it, as it dried out, the twist would become more extreme. But I assume you are speaking of plywood, not planks or boards of solid wood. In your case, if the wood was fully painted and finished, then the wood was most likely warped to begin with, you just did not notice it while assembling, most likely. I take that from your comment that someone else told you it was warped. |

Does waxing helps? I keep wooden cups as hobby and they are quite expensive. Any guidance will be appreciated. Thanks

Waxing? What do you have sold spun wood cups. It all depends on how the manufacturer finished them.
Were they laquared, painted with sealer, or oil rubbed? Wood is a natural element of the earth, as such it expands and retracts with the climate weather. It is best to keep your wooden cups in a sealed container. This will help control the environment. All wood not cared for properly will split or dry rot over time. |
