I have an idea for a cut and restored snakes routine, for a Halloween show. To do this, I would need to dye or color some ropes in a snakelike pattern. Something looking like an orange and black coral snake would be nice, but any snake-like pattern would work. (The head and tail, don't worry about - I have a way to handle those).

I have seen a thread on dyeing ropes, but single color only. Does anyone know how to do what I am after? Incidentally, rubber snakes won't work, sadly... I need uniform thickness throughout, for obvious reasons.

Thanks much,

Aram; I have dyed ropes in multicolor (3), but it can (usually is) difficult. The dye tends to "wick" up the rope past the point where you want it to stop. It takes a lot of trial and error to get it right and if you need two dyed colors next to each other (as opposed to color-white-color-white etc.), it becomes even more difficult.

I have been somewhat succesful using acrylic paint. The drawback to paint is that it tends to stiffen the rope. Some of the stiffness can be worked out by working the rope after the paint has dried. Roll it up into a ball and knead it for some time.

It won't be as soft as the original rope, but it may be useable depending on what you need to do with it.

Good luck. Smile
