Does anyone know of a source for very small orange or yellow cones.
They are mine versions of the larger ones used in divert traffic on the road or in stores. Thanks in advance. I thought I would try them instead of tape as a barrier between the audience and my area at next seasons library shows. Harris

Harris:
I think a toy store might have these as well as a sports store as well. Any place that sells stuff for street hockey etc. might also have them. I would also check out a store like Zaney Brainey. They also might carry them. I hope this helps give you some ideas. Let me know if you find them.

Harris -
A place like "Sport's Authority" ( a sport's super store like a Home Depot) would have what you are looking for. You could also try a place like Toy's R Us. I have seen them with some pretty interesting cut-outs and designs. Like Kyle ststes they are used for street hockey and I have also seen them used for soccer. There is also a flatter/lower sized plastic disks/markers (kind of like a frisbee with a whole in the middle) that could serve the same purpose. Happy hunting! peace, phill

HI,
I tried them and found that thae kids seem to find them distracting and want to play with them also becase they are small and light the kids tend to bang them anoyinly on the floor. Phillip |

I agree with Phillip. Anything like that that is placed on the floor as a barrier, tends to be picked up and played with and becomes a distraction during the performance.
Personally, I do not use any barrier type of devices. in my intro speech I create the room I need and remind the children that we must have our stage area so that everyone can see the magic happen. if they start to creep on me, a simple reminder usually works well. I do know they have out on the market what I think is called a kid show marker tape. It is a yellow tape that sort of resembles a cop "Do Not Cross" tape but is geared at children and can be placed down on the floor. I do not know much about it and wonder oif anyone knows more information on this.

Thanks
I have not used a marker as such. Librarians have tape available. I just saw a singer at the Library do a program. He had great tables, back drop, great stand up "sets" signs(with his name and contact info) sound system and the cones. Harris

Just got finished with 85 library shows for the summer vacation. Sad to see that it is over. I really enjoy them.
I have been doing them for 10 years now. And I too have found that the cones are total distration. I use BLUE painters tape. I also make a alittle aisle in middle. This makes it easy to get helpers to help and as I do my storytelling I walk up and down the aisle and this is very affictive it really gets the kids in backinto the show with my simply walking up and down the aisle. I send a lay out of how I would like the show performance area. Most of the time the llibrarians had it ready for me and they thanked me for giving them the lay out. Best, Ken Scott |

Thanks for the lead on the sportz store and web link, Phillip, Thanks for the input on the distractiveness(sic??) Ken, Thanks for the input on the tape. I love library gigs and do a lot of them. We go through August with them around here. Our theme this summer was Laugh it up at Your Library. Nigel got a great T-Shirt with the Laugh it up Logo on it. Great idea on the painter tape. Does it come in Yellow, green or red??? Hmm I can ask at one of my favorite magic stores. Wal-Mart that is. Harris Deutsch Laughologist

Yea I think they do have it in different colors. Our theme this year was " Books Ahoy" boats, underwater, pirates, etc.

I like the tape idea. I think this works well because the tape will stick to the floor or rug area and be a lot harder for the kids to tamper with or move. I think that is the most logical solution.

Harris,
The cones you are looking for are here: http://www.gophersport.com/Gopher/browse......eq=35497 I still use cones when doing a show in a school gymnasium. However, if you string jump ropes from cone to cone it will discourage the kids from playing with the cones and create a solid audience line to work within.

David:
If that works well for you, then I would certainly keep doing it. I have just not had much success with trying it that way. The kids in the Philadelphia area love to play with anything within their own reach. If I have cones down or rope, I can guarentee that the kids are going to start playing with it and cause a distraction during the performance. I like the tape idea since I feel that is a bit harder for the kids to pick up and cause problems with. I am going to give that a try and see what happens for me.

HI,
I use masking tape (this could be what Ken refers to as painters tape) the only minor hasstle I have had with it over the years in that although it wo't take the paint/varnish/colour off the floor it will leave a visible line (that looks like you have taken the varnish off) if the floor you stuck it to was a bit dirty. Those cones I am sure would be such a distraction. You may as well lay out candy as a barrier.

Anything you use has the words PLAY WITH ME in invisable letters that only the kids can read.
I use low tac masking tape, the stuff you use when painting. It comes up easy at the end and doesn't ruin the floor

Yea the painters tape is easy to get up and does not take anything off the floor. Real easy to get up. It is a little more expensive but worth it. ken |

Painters tape is the same type of thing as we artist call Drafting Tape. Drafting tape looks like masking tape but does not have the tackiness of regular tape. It is made to nbe used and pulled off of surfaces without causing any damage. It may even be cheaper then the painters tape.
You are so right about anything having the words.. PLAY WITH ME written all over it. I have learned the hard way by trying cones and even rope. Nothing works well. Anything the kids can lift up and move will be played with and become a big distraction. Tape works the best for me when I need it.

The cones could be a good idea if you use them for something. I'd use them for a barrier during the show and then have two kids come up with them for the final effect (or something close to the end if you have a favorite closer) use them in some sort of safety effect (produceing something or as an illistration for the effect) that way they're picked up at the end so nobody decides to play with them and hurt someone (kids will be kids)
the best way I can think of to STOP the kids from playing with them during the show is to refer to them during the show something like. " are my cones still there? Whew! good we woldn't want to loose those." A distraction? well maybe but NOT if you refer to them as something "special" that will be used during the show. As for the kids picking them up you can just totally STOP everything you're doing when they get picked up. Believe me the other kids will put a stop to someone playing with the cones and you won't look like the bad guy. remember they're important and we're using them in the show... they're special. Just warn the kids that "IF" someone pickes them up or goes past them your tricks don't work. for some reason everything stops and we wouldn't want to miss anything during the show would we? We only have a short time to be together and we don't want to have to miss a trick. well anyway that's my story and I'm sticking to it! enjoy!! Joe Comet |
