Well, not quite, but an ad with cups and balls. If someone feels this is way out of place here, please move.

I was approached by an ad agency to produce “a picture with magic”, kinda clever on their part to enlist a magician. No real instructions were given, only a wish for an oriental-looking drape and overall simplicty. Carte blanche essentially.

I gave them several pictures(including cards, silks, magic boxes) to choose from and to my great pleasure, they selected cups and balls. I am quite partial to C&B as I love the effect dearly so I was happy as a clam. They said it is “elegant with the true spirit of magic present.” Laymen do get it!

So I thought to post it here, for obvious reasons. Note that this is just the image, not the ad as I have nothing to do with that-don’t even know what campaign it is for.

Nice picture. Does it depict an actual set of cups or is it just a imaginative rendering?

It is imaginative. It is still a work in progress as far as materials and cup design go, I went for a more generic look until they give me something more tangible to work with.

Nice use of depth of field.

This is what I had done to depict the chop cup. You might want to consider something like this for the ball. It seems more magical to me. Otherwise I think your picture is very elegant. Smile

Thanks for the comments. Today I met with the person who calls the shots, the supervising art director. And she "loved it" but I had it all wrong. And I do mean ALL wrong. Wrong cups (we don't want "plain" cups, we want silver), wrong balls (we want them green), wrong feel (we want a photograph look), wrong mood (we want modern look but a home-like feel to it).

So I decided to give them something that fits their bill.

What kind of balls are those?

They're just standard 3D geometry with green felt material mapped on.

Some clients like to play "Guess What I Want" and you spend lots of time spinning your wheels.

Nice image. What modeling and rendering software are you using?

I really like the second version. You could do something very interesting with the reflection in the silver cups - a classic magician in top hat and tails or perhaps product placement.

Nice work!

I am using 3ds Max 2010 to model and Vray to render.

And now it seems they're happy, the only change they want is the table-no tablecloth, just wood. And then its officially done.

I was silly enough to actually bring C&B to the meeting. I had thought that they would like to see the effect. No, they sure didn't. The supervising AD told me her son got a magic kit this Christmas and she has seen the effect allready, many times. I almost walked out.

But how would you stack these cups - aren't the side beads a tad high?

Well it is a 3D image for a magazine ad so it doesn't really matter. The truth is I didn't even think about that.

Honestly I've loved all three of the images. I think they're stunning.

Excellent work... only thing I could suggest is building a virtual room around the scene and camera. Give more life to the metal cups with something for them to reflect. Maybe a box with photos of walls applied. But Kudos on what you have.
