I’m trying to create a self-lighting candle, but without much luck. My plan – following Spellbinder – was to use a match head, heated with a thin wire through which a current is passed. The idea is that the wire ignites the match, which lights the candle.

I am sure this works in the US, but British “strike anywhere” matches are significantly less reactive. With six AA batteries (9V), and a thin copper strand I can just about get the match to light, but it needs fresh batteries, and the wire (and battery pack) gets very hot. In other words, a lot of current is needed. I have not experimented with nichrome wire but I suspect the same will apply.

I have tried using flash wool and flash paper – they ignite much more easily but they do not light the match. I have thought about using lighter fuel but don’t really want to mess with liquids.

I feel sure that there is some pyrogenic chemical which I could apply to the wick of the candle which could then be ignited by the wire. Something that is itself fairly easily ignited but which would then burn for long enough to light the wick. But what would that be and where would I get it?

The effect PYRO-MENTAL MATCHES would be ideal for your needs.
Don't know how it's done though -- it's rumored that the matches are "self-contained"(micro-electronics).

Thanks - very interesting although it will be even more interesting when they are actually making and selling it!

It is not commercially available. I made it myself. I am writing up instructions that will be available in due course as an ebook.

Thanks for the link. I need to build something very different looking. Plans would help.

Nice one RJenkins. The one I made was basically a pipe with a zippo type wick in it. I used a glow plug, not the type used for flash pots, the ones used for lighting grills with a bayonet base. All hooked into 2 AA batteries and a switch. I put a water tight seal between the electronics and the wick, except for the glow plug that is. Worked fine for me. I used silicon on the sides of the pipe and painted it. It was a metal pipe loosely based off of McBride.

Thanks. What was your fuel? (My fear about lighter fuel is that it is very volatile and will just evaporate unless you have some way of regulating the flow, as a lighter does)

Rjenkins... Less important what was the fuel... basic lighter fluid... More important. Current pyro mania and the crazy regulation on things. I'm slowly phasing out anything using lighter fluid and moving towards the non-pyro but looks like pyro type of effects. In other words, if the flame is larger than a candle... It is going to be a non-toxic smoke substitute.
