Definitely unique! Some cool moves in there.
I have to say it was a bit like watching a Charlie Chaplain movie. After awhile his constant movement and twitching got to me.

Thanks Pete!
Glad to see that this video has resurfaced. It was pulled from YouTube. I could watch this performance over and over.

It had its good parts, but I kept thinking, "What supposedly just happened?" The routine was often confusing. I wasn't sure whether he meant some things as juggling or as magic. The pace also added to the confusion.

I thought this was quite beautifully thought out.
I'm impressed by the stretching of time; it seems to me that the beginning and end of the piece are "real time", and all the juggly-magical-acting in the larger center are sort of like the Pink Elephant scene in Dumbo- a sort of hallucination or imagined scenerio, that the splash at the end wakes him up from. Very, very original approach, and really a thinking piece. He reminds me a bit of Keaton. A, uh, deranged Keaton or maybe Chaplin. Also, his simple props seem to operate around him, he has that innocence you find in guys like Fred Kapps, one of my favorite magicians. Stuff happens to him, and all he can do is go with the flow. Surely an influence on this young guy. Very, very abstract and original!

Dai Vernon would have said "now that's not natural" but Tony Slydini would have loved it. Great act.

The guy's really good, clearly. Personally, I didn't care for all the strange hand movements at the beginning.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Reminds me of a Charlie Chaplain movie too. I've never seen anything quite like it before. Very clever!
It's not the size of the wand that matters, it's the "magic" in it...

A very fine performance. I'm sure he will come up with more in time. The way he works juggling into the magic realy keeps the interest along the way.

Chaplinesque is right. Offbeat, original and wonderfully entertaining. Tad long though.

Like it or not, this "routine" took some serious practice!

It's certainly different. I don't think that Slydini would have cared that much for it as said above that he would. I could be wrong of course.
I didn't not like watching that clip nor did really like it. He's good but I don't know maybe the character needs more work or something I'm not sure what I'm not liking or what I'm not. I want to like him but there's this but. |

For me it was the twitching and choppy movements. Yes, he had some impressive moves but I didn't care for the character he was playing.

Yes, some of it didn't really work for me... but overall seeing it is well worth the study.

I think if he didn't have the look of sometimes being happy that was having a neurotic issue with the tea pot the cup etc... I think his performance would have been more like able to me. I don't know like I said I want to like it but I think it was all the weird smiles he did at times that turned me off more than the over twitching etc..

Twitching was the best word I could think of to describe it, but yes, the awkward facial expressions were part of it for me.

Perhaps the twitching and quirky looks fit the character that is being portrayed. I see him as a neurotic yet lovable soul who just can't quite come to grips with reality.
IMO this act is a smart, funny, and highly entertaining bit of magical theater.

Dcjames,
I think you got it. It would be great to have Yann Frisch explain his stage personna himself, but I honestly think that he's playing the character with an attitude of a young man giving us a track on his mental health. Although it is not dressed in white, the scene could happen in a mental asylum. And I think that's what gives him the reason for acting like this and what he's trying to tell us with his stage character. So his motion, movements, facial expressions and body language are all done on purpose. He's not doing the magic, but is the victim of the magic. In my humble opinion he's acting a little bit like Fred Kaps was. That's what I wrote already in the first thread where I originally posted the video. Oliver. |
