I received the Axtell Magic Board and the FSX Board today; It’s really very basic, but lots of fun to manipulate.
Anyone here have the boards, or can come up with suggestions for routines? |

When I look at the Magic Drawing Board I look at it as a tool to create laughter. I think it's always fun to start a Magic Drawing Board (MDB) routine with a little "Magician in trouble". I like to make the animation at first happen where I don't notice it happening but the kids see the animation. Most routines for MDB start off with the blank board and you draw the eyes...they animate...then the mouth starts t work. You have a funny conversation and slowly erase everything. Maybe use a muffled voice.
I like to think outside the "Board". You could start your routine with words and writing on the board. Then slowly erase to reveal an animated face. Maybe use the board to say a message or theme you want to teach. Let me give you the idea I was thinking. Your could have on the board the words: SCHOOL IS COOL The "OO" in school could be the eyes and you could underling the COOL to create the smile. Erasing the extra letters and creating the animated face from reverse of the standard routine. It's just a crazy idea for you to toy with! Use the magician in trouble idea by making the face talk and move when your not looking. In the end you could chat to the board about your theme "School is Cool" then end the routine by re writing the word back on the board. Book-ending your routine to the starting position. It's something different from the normal routine done with the MDB.

A variation to this is start off with the board saying:
TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL Then end with: SCHOOL IS COOL

Well to tell the whole story about my purchase; I also purchased the AxTrax routine for the Art-O-Matic and the Noah.
I am getting the MP3 Tech and both will be a good routine to play it back with. Both are very funny routines and since I am so new, venting for such a long time may tire me so I make mistakes. I don’t know, but I will practice and use it in my first show and see how I do. I am copying down your suggestion on the double OO and think about a routine using it. Thanks |

I own one. I've used it a few times and think it's really an ingenious device. My biggest problem is that I'm left handed and its set up right handed.
This would normally not be a big deal (My vent figures are probably set up right handed...but I'm so used to 'em being this way that I use 'em left-handed anyway), but it's a little tough to draw a consistent (and non-shaky) line with the wrong hand. So I operate the drawing board left-handed...which isn't as easy as operating the figures that way. I like funnyclown's "OO" idea a lot. I use the drawing board as a sort of bridge between the magic part of the act into the vent part. The "OO" thing could make the transit even smoother. These days, of course, I don't do as many shows (vent or magic) as I once did...and yet, it's been in the last five years that I've bought or re-faced the most vent figures. Go figure. Or...go figures. -Philip |

I don’t know if it can be ordered, have you tried calling Axtell and asking if they would sell you just the parts for left hander?
You still have the same plastic face, frame, and front board; how much can it cost? As long as your updating and re-facing figures, refurbish the board |

Y'know, that might be a good idea. But the slots are on the wrong side, too. I'd have to take the whole thing apart...and I've never taken one apart before.
Only vent figures, puppets, show business constructs... Oh, and one time, in my youth, an antique Seth Thomas mantel clock. I was young. I'll NEVER do that again. -Philip |

I purchased the Axtell “ART-O-MATIC” routine on a whim when I purchased the Magic Board; it was backordered and just came today.
I am ambivalent about it, on one hand, it’s a funny bit and easy to use with the music and script; on the other hand, it’s not venting and does not further my performance as a ventriloquist. With no experience in front of an audience, I guess I am asking for guidance. What are the past experience of the vents here using a script and canned program? Buzz,
Leave the canned performance to the magicians. If you want to be a vent, don't cheat. No problem with using the script - that is why Steve sells it - just don't use the recording. JMHO Tom |

I agree with Tom.
Makes about as much sense as sitting on the stage with a stringless cello and miming to Cassals. -Philip |

OK $30.00 not totally wasted, on the DVD one track only has the music with no words on either part, the vent, or the board; I can use the music and sound effects and still vent.
