An old game 20 matches on the table.
You can take 1, two or three matches.
The person who takes the last match lose the game.

I can not remember the name of this game (trick).

Can someone point me out the origin and name of this game?

Thanks Regards Cornelis France

I have an entire series of posts that deal with Nim, and even a Nim Strategy Calculator.

The version with 20 matches, where you can take 1, 2, or 3 is usually called single-pile Nim. The version from Last Year in Marienbad is multi-pile Nim, and a different strategy must be used to find the best moves. (As a matter of fact, Marienbad Nim usually means specifically multi-pile Nim played with rows of 1, 3, 5, and 7 objects.)

There's enough variations of this game to keep you busy for a looooong time.

Or, if you can afford it, buy this book:

Thanks, Nir Dahan, for pointing me to this listing.
(Can't believe they don't throw in shipping for free!)

I remeber seeing the multi pile nin in an old surreal film on television. I think the film was French. I soon learned how to win with it and have made modest sums of money by gambling on the outcome.
Anyone remember the name of the film?

We just mentioned it above - Last Year in Marienbad. Here are some of the nim clips.
