I enjoy Yoga. How many of you practice it or have taken classes?

I try to do it everyday. It's been about 3 or 4 months now.
I use to Sivananda yoga years ago, but I no longer like it. I also recently developed tendonitis in my wrist, so I can't do anything that involves weight on my flat hands (although I can modify many poses with a loose fist). I've been doing a basic sequence I developed as well as slowly working throught Swami Satyananda's book "Comprehenisve course in the ancient tantric techniques of Yoga and Kriya." I like it, but I'm not sure if I will continue, I do really like the Bihar school of yoga and I use their books a lot. I don't go to classes, but my mom is a certified instructor and she helps with my technique. She also lent me a DVD on pranayama by Dr. Vasant Lad which is amazing and I've started doing his set over the past few days. I've experimented with kriya, or shatkarma, but have not found them that helpful; I mostly prefer asana and pranayama. What type of yoga do you do?

I did it for awhile in my twenties and thirties. It was very good for my body and mind. I think when people hurt themselves doing it, it is almost always because they're doing it in a class and feel obligated to do it at someone else's pace, rather than their own. My suggestion: get a good book and tape and teach yourself and do it at home.

I am overweight and very inflexible, if nothing else I would be very self conscious at a yoga class and if you feel like your way behind it's very difficult not to try to do more than you can handle. When I practice at home I can totally focus on what I'm doing, my breathing and how it all feels. For me it's also been helpful to more or less eliminate goals; of course I would love to be able to sit in lotus posture or easily touch my toes with a straight back, but those are not my goals. My goal is to do yoga everyday as well as I can and get the most out of it I can. I really like a book called "The complete yoga book" by James Hewitt. For some reason it is ALWAYS available at the local used book stores for very cheap, but it covers pranayama, asana and meditation fairly comprehensively and gives you a framework around which to build your own practice. I also recently inherited Rodney Yee's yoga cards and did my first set from them. I liked it quite a bit and I know that my library has several of his DVDs, so I'll check those out as well soon.

Years ago, in my late teens to late twenties, I did Yoga regularly and eventually became quite good at it. I was able to become flexible over the years and could do most of even some challenging poses. For one reason or another, I got out of it for many years then recently restarted going regularly again..
Clearly, I've noticed that if you don't use it, you lose it! I am not nearly as flexible as I was back in the day, but I'm quite certain that with a bit of time and dedication, I will be as flexible as before. I do know what you mean about feeling self-conscious in a group class however. There are some Yoga classes that are simplt too full. You have people jammed together in a small room. It's kind of hard to have a relaxing spiritual experience doing Yoga when some stranger's rear end is in your face during Downward Dog! Recently, I have also tried Bikram Yoga where participants do Yoga in a room that has been heated to 105degrees F(40.6 degrees C). The idea being that a hotter room loosens the joints and allows for better range of motion while releasing toxins from your sweat. I have a pretty good yoga mat, but when it is slick with sweat, it becomes extremely slippery and makes Yoga next to impossible when your hands and bare feet can`t "grip" properly. I suppose doing Yoga at home is a good thing provided you are disciplined enough with yourself to actually DO it! Any more Yoga experinces? Happy Thoughts, Paul Pacific

My yoga experience is limited to what's included on "Wii Fit". My wife tried yoga for a bit, but stopped when she discovered it seemed to actually be decreasing her flexibility.

I have no idea, that's just what she told me. It's possible she accidentally strained something- that would cause pain when moving, temporarily decreasing flexibility until it healed.

I guess it's possible to use them effectively, but my knees were aching a lot. I have since stopped doing those and do "cobbler's pose" everday; no pain at all. If I had not been cautious I think I could have really injured myself, something to consider for those of us who only do it at home.

I took Yoga classes back in my Community College days.
I liked it. Helped me recover better after my car wreck. Been a while since I've practiced though. I do still use a lot of the breathing techniques when I stretch after my weight training.

I remember seeing that in one of his books.
I also have Bryan Kest's videos and a book by Diamond Dallas Page (the wrestler) called "Yoga for Regular Guys." I bought it because of the introduction by Rob Zombie. I hadn't ever considered yoga before I got that book. I thought it was for chicks and hippies and hippie chicks.

So is the trumpet his primary instrument. My favorite is his own invention the Firebird, not that the Superbone doesn't deserve mention.
