Basically, you can either pull or push Nipps.
With a block and tackle you could pull him up. It's the manly approach, because it uses more equipment. But it's also more hands-off, and has some serious negative connotations. For those who like to work, pushing him up a ladder would be more fun. My question is, what do you do with him, once he's up there?

Seems to me that if you are performing stunts that are, in the current era, associated with the sideshow, you are a sideshow performer. Unless you are being hired and paid by a history book or a label, you need to be called something straightforward, that the audience can identify and understand.
Is Chris McDaniel still a Western performer if he is east of the Mississippi? Is Kevin Smith a film maker if he shoots on digital video? Within the community, sure, identify yourself as a showman, or sideshow arts performer, or a danger stuntman, but to the public, a sideshow act is defined by what is done, not where it is done. Just my $.02

I agree with those that have said it's shaaaykee ground to combine magic and genuinely dangerous stunts in the same show. Unless it's a variety show with seperate performers. I think the illusory aspect of the magic detracts from the reality of whatever stunts you are doing. Seems better that folks appreciate the genuine danger to your person and work involved in learning the skill.

Critter: I know what you mean. Ive been struggling with this for a while. Obviously sideshow and magic go together a little bit, since we are talking about this on a magic forum. I don't do enough sideshow to pull off an entire show, and I don't know if I'd get hired as a strict sideshow style performer either. The way I usually do both is to start with magic, hypno wheel, smash and stab, mentalism etc. Somewhat edgier and bluured lines as far as "magic" goes. Hypno wheel is an optical illusion. Smash ans stab almost seems like a stunt (cause it COULD go wrong). Mentalism is somewhat different from pure magic, even if it uses the same methods. Mind reading seems different to an audience member than "pick a card... is this it?" From there I end with the 4 or so sideshow stunts. I announce they are stunts and real. Almost like 2 halves of a show. I think we might be taking this a bit too seriously. The audience only cares that it was funny and entertaining... Not that some was "fake". I want to have a good blend of magic, sideshow and comedy . Wonder, danger and laughter... seems like a good show to me!
But I know what your saying. Good stuff... |

I knew a guy that used to do an act with the Sach's Dice Trick, Professor's Nightmare, Fraidy Cat Rabbit and then he would finish with hammering a nail into his nose.

Not saying it can't be done. I did both back when I was performing regularly. I've only recently decided that I don't want to give anyone any reason to doubt the genuineness of my strongman stunts. Especially since there are so many ways to fake them going around on the web. So dropping the magic was a personal choice for me.
I would never presume to tell anyone else what they can or can't do.

I'm honest from the start and tell them what I'm going to be doing. If they don't like the sound of it they leave. But the majority stay and let their kids stay. Those people who believe kids will copy anything are idiots. Kids are kids. But they're not stupid. I don't do my stuff in the Jim Rose shock style. I routine everything so it's family entertainment. As my banner says, "Gut wrenching family fun". Re: calling yourself a sideshow performer. I don't know. It depends on your definition of what a sideshow is. I'm just breaking into the outdoor scene her in blighty and I'd say that I have a modern sideshow set-up. It's not a 10 in 1. More of a 1 with 10. In otherwords I'm a solo performer with a series of separate acts that I string together to make a full show. I perform it as a small side attraction. So I class myself as a sideshow performer. Although the "label" I use is escape artist, and if asked to clarify stuntman often helps clear things up.
