How's it going MagicCafe, my first post here.
I was wondering if any of you could suggest some great, visual effects that you could pull off in, say, a noisy bar for instance. I'm also looking for effects that don't take too long to perform, but rather are very visual, and perhaps best not to involve cards. For instance, something like going up to a group of people in a bar and saying "Hold out your hand" or "Help me with something" and pulling off a great effect. What are your favorites? |

Kc, are you working at the bar, or do you mean just for fun? I ask because if you don't work there and have no desire to ever do that, then you have a great deal more latitude in what you can do.

Quick, fast, visaul and a attetion getter? Fire wallet.
-Coin/cap in bottle. -Paddle trick is worth looking at. There are some that use chalk marks or a pin in holes. I use a money paddle. -D-lites Sponge balls are great but also sponge bunnies are a winner as well. I nlike the idea of no cards also happing in there hands. But always have one or two tricks to do on your own as pepole cant get involed holding drinks and food.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

There is an awful lot you can do with a TT in a bar. Cheap...easily portable...lots of uses.

Your choices in life can be compared to watching a magic trick: You can continue to believe the illusion in front of you, find the intrigue and desire to learn more, or quit paying attention the moment you feel deceived.

Not in the hand, but Jardonnet fire wallet. Show the fire, then pull 5 dollar bills out of the wallet. Change to hundreds, then back to ones (Extreme Burn by Richard Sanders). I have done this hundreds of times, and it always blows them away.
This is incredibly visual magic that works well in a bar setting. Another great one is "Charming Chinese Challenge" by Troy Hooser. Very visual, and uses the spectators hand for a couple of the phases. Then there is "Pointless" by Gregory Wilson. Finishes with them holding the pen.

Front Row Sankey is a good Dvd for this purpose kingcobra123.
First trick is a fun autograph exchange with a spectator that is a good table approaching icebreaker that involves lots of interaction. 5 or 6 other good ones that involve spectators without the use of cards. Worth checking out! Have fun, John

When done right, the Ambitious Card Routine can happen in the spectator's hands (Google Jon Kamm ACR and you'll find it), but as far as in your face magic, I'd say go with sponge balls.

I've actually used cards in bars (as a patron, not as a worker) and I've found that although people are definitely impressed, I just came across as "that guy with cards" all night, so I had people asking me to repeat tricks and over.
Most of the ideas here are great, they come across as off the cuff (which is ironically the name of the DVD I just bought by that Greg Wilson guy). I think that might work better for bar magic because it's just so random and unexpected. |
