Well, it was bound to happen.
I came home from the ring meeting, put my bag (attache case) of tricks in the corner, and went to bed. The bag wound up no longer in the corner, and being jumped on by a six year old and a three year old. Only one of my cups got bent, and it's a very slight bend. It's not noticeable at a glance, but the other cups no longer sit in it properly. I have managed to slam the other cups into it enough that they fit in somewhat well, but is there another way to get this bent one back in shape? Thank you. -Andrew |

You can probably get them fixed at an instrument repair shop, however depending on the cost to buy a new set (you said they are aluminium so I am guessing they might not be "high end") then it might not be economical to do so.

As Bri wrote… it might be too expensive to get them repaired, you might now have a set of displays Cups for your magic shelf.
Good luck, Bruce |

Thank you sincerely for your answers.
It was only one bent cup -- so I guess they will go on display and the good two can serve as backups. The set would only be $25 to replace. Now I can make a good excuse to the wife to place an order. "And while I'm paying for shipping...." I'll add some more balls to replace the ones lost during practice and maybe a present or to for myself. I deserve it after this traumatic event. |

There are plenty of 2 cup routines to choose from!

I thought about that, too.
I'll see if I have any information on them while waiting for the mail to get here. One day I'd love a nice brass set, but these aluminum ones have served me extremely well. Except for the jumping kids. |

Andrew - create your own 2 cup routine! You can start with your existing 3 cup routine and then adjust it to two cups. Alternatively just develop from scratch. Even if you do end up purchasing another set and revert back to your three cup routine, the experience of developing a two cup will push your thinking and make you a better magician.

Might make an interesting story for a routine...the reason you're using two cups instead of three (and something having to do with the fact that two kids were jumping on it.) Just a thought anyway...sometimes the best routines come from reality!

Aluminum cups are not difficult to straighten out. You can squeeze them in the opposite direction or you can force them over a round object that is the proper diameter -- baseball bat, etc.
Assume that the set is trashed, Then anything you do is an improvement.

That's a good bit of optimism to be guided by!

Assume that the set is trashed, Then anything you do is an improvement. That's exactly what I did. I ordered an identical set from the same mail order place because I really do like the light aluminum set. For lack of a better term, it resonated well with me. It was also my first set. In theory, I could end up with five identical cups and one to play with. At the very least, that would be insurance against future accidents. Again, I really appreciate all of your input. Thank you. |

Hey Andrew,
Since you will have at least 5 matching cups, you can do some interesting things with those extra cups if you are sitting down. Look for Aldo Colombini's method for putting a cup thru the table and consider the possibilities. Dominique Duvivier produces a 4th cup on the table at the end of his routine - quite a surprise. I think there's a wealth of unexplored ideas that utilize additional cups that are either secretly substituted in a three cup routine, or added in as a multiplying cup surprise. |

When is Aldo planning to come that way? I may head over in your direction for that one!
If you go to the Austin Magic Auction, bring your cup along. I may be able to unbend it for you. Or not!

I currently don't have an exact date / 100% confirmation - only that I plan to be there.
As for the auction -- I went 2 years ago and filled up my studio with "things to work on later." BUT, if I get the job I just interviewed for then maybe I'll have to go anyway. Of course, hanging out with everyone is usually worth the price of admission anyway. Thank you, too. I will be sure to let you know early/ish if I go, and bring the bent cup. I really appreciate your offer as well. The new set got here Monday. I went to play with them then wound up practicing with the 12" rings I got from the 2009 auction. |

I've just decided to go to the auction this year. If nothing else, I want to see everyone.
I can still bring the bent cup, but it's not a great concern to me. If my wife picks up groceries this week then I can even afford to do a little shopping. I'll still try to say hello, either way. |

Looks like I won't be at the Austin auction, after all. I was cleaning out my late brother's house and forgot to wear a respirator. I inhaled some kind of detritus that is giving me fits.
