I posted this review in response to a post on Latest and Greatest, but I thought it would be perfect for this section of the Café.
I recently got my copy of Brian's new manuscript, For Your Consideration, and I wanted to share a few thoughts regarding his new offering. First off, I've never met Brian, and only know him through his contributions here on the Café and from watching his videos on his website. Brian comes across as a very likable, charismatic performer, and his routines are well thought out and structured for maximum impact. The thoughtfulness with which he creates his routines are very evident after reading through the manuscript. The manuscript is comprised of two essays and four complete routines. A sponge ball routine, two card routines, and a coin routine round out the material covered. I love to read essays that delve into the mind of the creator behind the magic. It gives me a little insight into what makes that person tick, insight into what is important, and more importantly gives me food for thought to help me improve my own magic. The two essays included do exactly that. The magic itself is well crafted, and is easily within the reach of any intermediate level magician. Instead of difficult sleights, Brian relies on smart routining to create the desired effect on his audience. The two stand-out effects for me were his sponge ball routine and a card routine called Chicken Bones. Whether or not you're a fan of sponge ball magic, Brian makes a powerful argument for inclusion of this routine in your repertoire. After reading his thoughts, I was sold on the idea. His routine takes minimal pocket space, and provides clear moments of pure magic. Included in this routine is a seldom used sleight in relation to sponge balls, which actually fooled me the first time I saw him do it on video. This is one routine that can easily become a staple of your walk-around set if you choose to learn it. The Chicken Bones routine was the one that I was really looking forward to trying out in front of real audiences, and I had the perfect opportunity last night while performing at one of my weekly restaurant gigs. The impact on the guests was exactly what I was expecting. It KILLED! This is a great routine with a wonderful surprise ending. To me, this one routine is worth the price of the entire manuscript. If you like commercial, practical, and high impact magic, For Your Consideration, is definitely worth your consideration. I am honored to have such a wonderful review from the one and only Lou Serrano. For those of you who may not feel comfortable ordering directly from my website, the manuscript is also available from Lybrary.com and ElmwoodMagic.com, but of course I would urge you to support the creator directly (that's me!)
Thanks everyone. I still appreciate all the support the Café gave to my ebook series Cards, Coins, Thoughts & Theories a few years back. And this project, I promise you, is a HUGE leap forward from that series. And my gracious thanks to all of you who have already purchased this manuscript and supported my work. |

Reviews are slowly trickling in. This one just came in at Elmwood Magic:
"For Your Consideration" offers detailed instruction that goes further than just "teaching tricks." It covers sleights, patter, routining, misdirection, movement and audience interaction tips. The part I found most important was the in-depth outlines of why and how all of these parts are used to build great routines. Some really great insight on close-up magic... insight that can even be adapted for parlor or stage. A nice style of writing with carefully selected content, from a professional close-up performer. -Mat, USA |
