Many of you know I have been replacing much of my cups collection with traditional examples. Tin cups rarely make an appearance at the auction sites and it is even rarer when they sell anywhere near my budget. I have collected enough images of this style of cup to have a set made by a wonderfully talented tinsmith who really loves his job. Bill Palmer and Sean McWeeney (fortasse) were key in supplying the proper construction information on these old cups.
I don't know when the last set of tin cups were made for a conjurer, but this is what they would have looked like fresh out of the tinner's shop. I had these made with the same dimensions as the Harrie's Bosco cups. The last picture you can see the pieces involved in making one cup. If anyone would like to order a set, PM me and I will send along the tinsmiths info. I plan on having a few more examples made for my collection. http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/4920/p3070002.jpg http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/1386/p3070004.jpg http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/9525/p3070007h.jpg http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/6220/p3070008.jpg http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/194/p3070009.jpg http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/4294/p3070010y.jpg http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/3782/p3070011.jpg http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/6070/p3070012u.jpg http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/5760/p3070013o.jpg http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/2882/p3070014.jpg http://img852.imageshack.us/img852/646/p3070015.jpg http://img809.imageshack.us/img809/8238/p3070016.jpg http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/9273/p3070017.jpg http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/4830/p3070018w.jpg http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5847/p3070019k.jpg http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/4118/p3070020.jpg http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/11/p3070021kw.jpg http://img828.imageshack.us/img828/6645/p3070022.jpg http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/2210/p3070023.jpg http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/6339/p3070025.jpg -todd

How thick is the gage on these? Tin is quite susceptible to dents if it's not thick enough.
I'm quite interested, if they're thick enough!

These are really nice. I have several sets of tin and brass cups of this type. The metal is usually somewhat thin. However, the newer, present day tin is much more durable than the stuff from the 1800's.

I wonder why they ever went out of style. Tin is a lot more economical than copper or brass. I'm sure there's an explanation. Aesthetics perhaps? Tin doesn't develop a particularly attractive patina, that's for sure. Then again, I personally like that old, rugged, aged, dull gray look that tin cups grow into after a hundred years or so!
Will be interested to see how Todd's tin cups age. Sean |

The traditional tin cup, as we find in the magic sets, is made of four pieces of metal, five if you include any wire that is used in the mouth bead. The sides are usually doubled. The skirt is a separate piece, and the bottom is a separate piece. These cups that Todd has are made a bit differently.

Bill, is there an "exploded" view anywhere to help visualize what you are describing? Could you draw one if not to help?
