Hi!
In your opinion, are Illusion shows dying in cruise ship market and been more popular the Parlour/stand up shows or are equally demanded both on ships? Thanks, -H

I have never performed on a cruise ship, so I cannot attest to a change. But I have been a guest on many and I always enjoy the stand-up stuff more. Illusions on a cruise ship seem very impersonal. I know showrooms are getting larger and larger, but it just seems to me that a personal connection seems more at place on a ship than at a Vegas casino.

Depends on the ship(s) if they have a huge showroom, it's larger illusions.
As a rule, I'm seeing illusions, but fewer in a show, and smaller/simpler ones. What I've mostly found, is that they want a lot of you for their buck, stage, cabaret, table, walk-around, close-up, that seems to be the direction. Walt |

Ships use illusionists or comedy magicians, not much else. Animals are usually out.

Walt make a good point though, you will be expected to do much more than in the past. I work a few ships every few years to keep my contacts up in the industry and this is one of those years for me. I've certainly noticed a change. |

My understanding is that Royal Caribbean's new ships, larger ships use NO variety acts. Comic work the comedy club and the stage is reserved for production shows.
Don't know if this is a trend across the other lines. |

Magicians have done it to themselves though. Think about it. Cookie cutter shows are starting to catch up with them. Someone was bound to notice that they can just put a 12 buck an hour employee in there instead right?

They've been doing that at theme parks for years.
I've been performing on Royal Caribbean for 20 years. They have a few magicians but use a lot of jugglers as the variety spot. The comedy clubs are only on 2 of their 22 ships. They tried Cirque on Celebrity Cruise and it was a big flop.

Greg,
Have you seen Variety acts on the Allure or Oasis? |

No. Production shows, headline/star act & two comics each cruise in the comedy club.
