Please find attached a copy of the letter that I sent to Mr. Eric Eswin describing what happened backstage. I thought you might find it interesting as you are trying to give fair information about the reality.
Regards to all. Quote:

Sad story really but I think that in these events one must go prepared to cater for himself without expecting the help of others. That's the only way to go, and more than often it's learned the hard way.
NEVER rely on external sources, no matter how efficient or professional they claim to be, unless they are on your wages book. Hope this will be your last bad experience in the magic contests field. |

Dear Mr. Rios!
I will inform the Swedish Magic Circle as the forthcoming host for FISM 2006 about your complaints. I am sure it will be a lot better in Stockholm.

This is one subject I have to comment on. When I was in my 20's, I performed mainly at local magic clubs in the San Francisco Bay area and I entered a few magic close-up competitions in which with some basic skills I did OK. I don't go to local magic clubs or enter contests anymore because my presentation took off when I started performing for real paying audiences.
I completely agree with Joel Bauer, Jon Tremaine and others on this subject. The only way you are going to grow is to do your stuff in the real world. There are too many negative dabblers out there. Don't cast your pearls!
Self concept is destiny..

Despite his bad experience at FISM, mine was an excellent one and I highly reccommend doing contests. I am a huge fan of Joel Bauer's and have had the opportunity to work across the aisle from him at a number of trade shows. If you don't think that enviroment is a contest!
If I had not had the confidence from years of magic contests I would most likely have packed my bags and told my employer to feed off Joel's scraps. Instead I stayed...did my job..got a bonus! FISM was a huge undertaking and I am sure there are a few horror stories. With that many contestants in such a short period of time ...bad stuff can happen. As an example, my friend was schedule to perform just before a break. They chose to have the break early and when it was his turn to start directly after the break, he was seen by less than a third of the people because they took so long to come back into the theatre. I still think contest are great and will be at FISM 2006 to give it another kick at the can.... Shawn Farquhar 2003 FISM Silver Close Up |

Learn this basic rule. Trust as few people as you can. In todays society, it is sad to say but people are mainly out for themselves.
