Easy, you try it and if they don't break your face, they are not sharp!
Seriously, I guess you take small chances and figure out if you can risk it... Or better yet, you have another guy confirm to you that they are not fast company... Slim |

You make "mistakes" well before you try anything keen. If the mistakes get picked up, you think long and hard about your next move.

If you can't spot the sucker at the table .....
A living picture of London, for 1828, and stranger's guide, by Jon Bee Badcock is an interesting book.

You must have heard through the Official Hustler underground that I have developed a new product to determine the type company you are playing in. It is called The Poker Chump Meter. It is a software program which can be accessed during Brick and Mortar play through any computer or iPhone. Simply type in the person’s name and get an immediate readout of his playing ability and knowledge of scams, gaffs and moves. For example, I enter into my computer the name “tommy.” The printout comes back with the following: Triple sharp, brilliant player and has vast knowledge of all gaffs and card scamming methods. Also, very capable with cards and dice and has undetectable moves under fire. A true Erdnase Expert. Received accolades for his PhD thesis entitled, “The Erdnase Code” in which he revealed the exoteric and mystical secret meanings within the text of The Expert at the Card Table. I then enter, “Cagliostro” into the program and the following comes back: Super chump, can be fooled with almost any gaff including putting bits of chewing gum on the back of the cards to mark them. Always plays any two cards, has no knowledge of scams or card table moves and can easily be beaten for large amounts of money with little effort. Believes all men are honest when playing poker and therefor has no need for learning how people could cheat at cards. Let’s try one more time. Let me enter, “AMcD,”and it says: Currently on Sabbatical. Reenter his name when he returns. If playing online, simply load the program into your computer and all the players on your screen will be rated as well as a composite chump factor (from 1-10), showing how easy or difficult the game may be to cheat. So tommy, as you can see you now longer have to fret about the type game you are playing in including their scam knowledge. This program is a real time saver and is only $4,999.95. PM Cag for ordering instructions and immediate download after payment received. |

When Silas Green of Pumpkin Ville prepared to leave the Farm
His father thought some good advice might do the boy no harm “ My son.” He said , “ You’re going off to that there distant city. you are going to look for wealth and fame and to fail would be a pity. The city’s full of slickers boy the crooks and the gold brick men. Why they’ll steal the gold right out of your teeth and the ink right out of your pen. Now heres a bit of good advice that you’ll find that it is true. If you slick the slickers first, they can’t hornsawaggle you. Arnold RIP - Another Cag student bites the dust?

You can listen to Ben talking about how and more importantly why he decided to try and fool Penn & Teller on this weeks episode of The Magicians' Podcast here:
http://magicianspodcast.podbean.com/e/ep-67-ben-earl/ It is free! I hope you enjoy it. Rich
Thanks, Richard

"He's without doubt one of the greatest sleight of hands magician in the world".
I stopped there. I was really afraid to get hit by such a tremendous level of modesty and humility. |

Well, he may be a great sleight of hand magician – no problem with that. And while I have the time to look at a few posts on this BB occasionally, to listen for 71 minutes to a magician podcast is beyond my level of tolerance. However, thanks to Rich for posting the link for the members. I am sure there are many on this forum that have the time to listen and will enjoy it. For those that do listen for 71 minutes, it would be nice if you would give your comments for the other members here on the BB. I for one would find such comments informative and possibly fun to read. I find the evolution of sleight of hand magician demonstrations of "gambling" mythology to be fascinating. These demos certainly can be "interesting" to watch and sometimes even enjoyable if the presentation is "clever," even if not "real." They certainly are perfect for The Gambling Spot. While I have never seen a Benjamin Earl demo, if he is that skillful I certainly respect him, and well as others, for those type accomplishments. Well...that’s show biz...and the world keeps spinning and I must confess it makes me a little dizzy sometimes. |

Ben has been doing this exact trick/demonstration many times during the last months, while touring scandinavia.
During one of the times, I shuffled my own deck and he did exactly, as on Fool Us |

I went to a recent neo-movement workshop then the subsequent lecture for the local Magic Circle. While he came across as very earnest on the Magician's Podcast, he is hilarious in person. Had the room rocking, got a standing ovation at the lecture. And aside from the sheer entertainment factor, it is rooted in some very interesting ideas on performance. As a musician who loves to improvise, I can see the value of learning moves that can be performed flexibly to suit the moment, allowing the interaction with people to be part of the method. In my view, the Penn and Teller performance is perfect in that it was unusual and riveting and we still don't know what he was really doing. People are quick to discount memory work when there is so much physical skill as well, but we perhaps need to be thinking more like mentalists..

You don't know what he was doing? Geez...
I wouldn't like to offend you, but there are people in this place who can handle a deck of cards, apparently better than you can do. He would need a lot of work and a far better routine in order to fool them. Besides, I don't like his very arrogant style. |

Ben Earl has nothing to do with gambling, hustling, or anything else relevant to this forum.
He's a magician doing basic card tricks. Next. |

Judging from the video it seems very obvious what he is doing (from a cardman point of view obv.).
So this whole "neo-movement" thing is just a fancy, cool name? Or is there anything more to it, which gets explained in his workshop? |

It addresses the widespread problem of over-rehearsed, smooth card moves and how these create suspicious patterns of behaviour. This would seem to be as relevant to hustlers and card cheats as to magicians. I'm sure everyone is aware of the goal of naturalism but there is not a lot out there on methods to achieve it. So yes, this gets explained in the workshop and I would recommend it to anyone open to rethinking and reworking their material.
