It would have been great.

Both "The magician" and "It takes a thief" offered up protagonists that seemed to have some escape skills, heck, Bixby inspired me when I was 12, but a pure escape artist would have been cool.

Avery Schreiber?!?!

Is the show good enough to purchase? Are the a lot of escapes in the movie?

Wow--Thanks Steve. I'm ordering it.

This film was the forerunner to Bixby's "The Magician" (1973/74)...when magicians were "cool" & lady-killers.

Being an adventure pilot, the main character, Cammeron Steele, does non-performance escapes (ala Houdini's serials). In this film, he's:

Handcuffed, tied to a weight and dumped, unconscious, off the pier,

Thug: "I hear this guy can get out of anything. Okay Pal, let's see how REALLY good ya' are."

and, later, straitjacketed and hung upside down in a locked room.

Thug: "Well, now, Mr. Steele, you're not gonna get outta this one."

Steele: "I'll try, gentlemen."

Ummm... I believe this was done in 1971 and The Magician's pilot arrived about 2 years later during 1973. So unless I've misunderstood the concept of something being a ripoff I think you may be a little off the mark with that accusation.

There are two films called The Magician one released in 1926 and the other in 1958 (called The Face here in the UK), but both of these films have different plots to the TV series and therefore would not be considered to be an inspiration for either of the TV series mentioned here.

Yes, "ESCAPE" predates "The Magician".
