Thank you richard and Ian. Informative. Must have been a real treat to own a magic shop, Ian. Not sure for the accountants but certainly for the little boy in us all. A great way to scratch that "what's-new" itch.

Some of the older canes you also had to be VERY careful with. Many an old-time magician have scars on their palms from the metal cutting them.

My buddy had a metal one from about 30 years ago. It was likely a Walsh. Excellent cane. I ended up with a plastic one as a teen and hated it. It is sitting on my desk in front of me as I speak...just to remind me not to buy cheap crap.

Thanks guys, the history lesson is great but the OP hasn't had an answer to his question. Shame as I would like to read the answer too. :-(
Warmest regards
James

The answer is there but granted it did get a little sidetracked. The best option is still a good used Walsh cane. Some of the German ones were ok. The ones made by Harrakan or Mahka Tendo are sold by SEO Magic and very good. I also used some from East Coast Magic that very good. They also make a matching vanishing cane.

Fantasio. Candles yes ... canes , um , not so much. Fantasio Appearing Cane is proably the worst . Slow to open and flimsy when fully extended.

By the way : all of these things, canes, candles , appearing , vanishing are meant to be used on stage, some distance away from the audience . Talking about "visible coils" that sort of thing should not really be an issue if performed from the proper distance. It becomes an issue when you try to do this sort of thing at a kid's birthday party show in someone's living room, only a few feet from the audience. DON'T do that.

Anyone still looking for a cane should check out madhatter magic. They have the red and white SEO? cane for $30.00 on sale. I think the $100+ could pay for a paint job with money left to spare....

I have and use the mahka tendo cane.i bought this from seo magic site about 3 years ago.i use it in about every show. it has never failed me.it is extremly fast.mine is the red and white stripped one.the paint job has held up very well.and it has been opened up thousands of times.it is a little high in price.but it is well worth the money to me.i use a red and white striped silk with it.it looks just like the silk transforms into the cane.

Like Bowers, I too use a Tendo cane from several years ago and it has served me well. No problem with the teflon paint job and it IS pretty fast. Love the "opening mechanism" also. Very efficient.
