I received a very encouraging email from President Del Wilson of the FCM- Del received permission from the IWU Caféteria staff to allow for "table hoppers" during the lunch and dinner hours at this year's convention. This is similar as to what happened at Winona Lake decatdes ago. What this means if you have a short close-up Gospel magic (or allied arts) routine designed for "table hopping"- you are now encouraged to share that during the meal hours of the convention. All you have to do is go up to any dining table in the Caféteria and ask permission first from those eating at that table if they'd like to watch your routine. If the answer is yes- go for it! Several weeks ago, I performed for Ring 211's annual Abracadabra close-up show a 12 minute routine (which I did ten times) which I would love to share at FCM this year. It includes Dean's Box, the vanishing area paradox, the "Phil" deck, some ring effects, and others- some with Gospel applications of course. This will give other performers like myself who do closeup or street magic card and coin routines the encouraging open opportunity to share our stuff with other FCMers that normally would be too small to see at the "Late Late Show" or other venue. So closeup workers- bring your stuff!- and here's your chance/feel free to "work the tables" at the the 2011 FCM convention. Should be a lot of fun and just one more thing to enjoy at this year's convention. See you there! This will also be announced in the next issue of "The Voice of the FCM." See http://www.fcm.org for full convention details.

Although I won't be getting to the convention until late Tuesday night, I hereby commit to do some "table hopping" in the Caféteria later in the week. Maybe we can start an informal list (no sign ups required) of performers here on The Magic Café' who are willing to do the same- this will serve as an encouragement to all of us about this new closeup opportunity. We can eat our cake and watch table hopping routines at the same time- that will be cool- I love it! One new to this type of magic can also use this as a way to gain some closeup experience before a very forgiving group of fellow FMCers. Fired Up! Roger from Kazoo land.

Just a reminder to anyone who does close up magic and will be attending the 2011 FCM convention in Marion, Indiana- please bring your table hopping act! The FCM Board and the IWU Caféteria folks have approved your doing "close up" magic upon any table's request during the lunch and dinner hours at this year's FCM convention. I am looking forward to it- getting practice on my own "set" plus watching others do their thing- particularly interested in seeing how others may use close up effects to share the Gospel. Again, you are not limited to "Gospel magic" only- but this is certainly an open opportunity to try out doing close-up "with a Message". If so inclined, you could even request feedback from the watching table- as many are fellow performers in their own right and you may be able to pick up some helpful pointers. No signing up either- just go ahead and begin. I will start doing my routine on Wednesday noon lunch probably if you want to wait until then to join me. Fired Up! Go to http://www.fcm.org for convention and registration information. See you there!

By the way, if you are quite certain you will be doing close up at the 2011 FCM convention- why not post it here?- it may serve as an encouragement to others to join in as well. I hereby commit to start table hopping Wednesday at noon in the Caféteria! Roger Magic Bus

I'm in for this as I have done restaurants and have now also booked my first couple of fairs.

Thanks Rev. Mike! Let's keep this going- would be a real encouragement for sure! Let's say we get 15+ folks all saying here they will being doing table hopping in the Caféteria at the 2011 FCM convention- it will be yet another good reason to attend this year! By the way, if you have not been to the IWU campus lately- it is amazing- they just keep building, and building, and building... The facilities there are really first rate. I've used the IWU library a few times-loaded with Bible and teaching resources.

Hey Kif and many others coming to the 2011 FCM convention in Indiana- want to help me out with some close up magic in the Caféteria? Let me hear from you all out there- Rev. Mike and I don't want to be the only ones out there!
I am not sure exactly what I will be doing yet, but probably will be drawing from Dean's Box (Dean Dill), the Phil card trick (Max Maven), Coin FUNnel (FUN, Inc.), dice stacking (Clarke "The Senator" Crandall), Vanishing area paradox (Kerry Kistler), Rings of Truth (Wolf Magic), and Which Square is Darker? A or B? (www.LivingWaters.com). So you may want to avoid doing these same effects in your routine as you might be overlapping with the Magic Bus's close up, and that would constitute an invasion into my turf, a detraction of my bloated ego and enormous stature, and I might throw a temper tantrum because someone did a better job than yours truly. Whoops, did I get off track or what?- Come on close up FCM guys coming to the FCM convention- let me hear from you! I sure hope the Happie Amp guy is there again at the FCM convention this year- his close up chops are killer (his coins fly UPward from his bottom palm up into his overturned top hand- now that's muscle control). |

Well CLOSE UP at FCM is official now- see page 15 of this month's Voice of the FCM. Also looking forward to checking out when it is available "Gospel in your Pocket" by Joey and Alexandra Evans (see page 12: May/June 2011 issue)- sounds like this could be a good resource even if more written for the lay audience.

I will have to check it out in there. I'm looking forward to the close-up this July, I know it will be a great addition to the conference!
We are hoping to have the book out this summer, I would love to have them for the FCM convention!

I "found" another old neat "table hopping" effect today- perfect for my non-skilled hands (I don't do triple lifts, card breaks, back palms, etc.). There are a lot of nice tricks that involve money- I wanted one that could be used for close-up for a restaurant type/FCM Caféteria table setting. Since I use a high portable stand, doing a coin matrix or three shell game or other super close-up tricks would not work well as the sitting dining patrons would have a hard time seeing the top of the table stand (which is much higher than the table level so everyone can see). Plus, I was looking a trick where at the end, I could hand out the "million dollar" bills produced by http://www.livingwaters.com which also have our church web site printed on it.
I saw that Elmwood Magic was selling the Ickle Pickle Products "The Jumping Signed Bill Trick". I bought it immediately- it is perfect to meet my criteria above. It is very visable- everyone can see it. It involves a spectator (which is always good) and ends with the spectator getting the signed million dollar bill to keep (plus can give additional bills to the other folks sitting at the table). The trick itself is very well made- but the instructions that come with it are not all that terrific. But not to worry- a quick search at http://www.youtube.com has at least three different videos of this trick being performed- I knew exactly what the routine involved before even receiving the written instructions. It's not absolutely perfect magic- and may not fool all magicians- but it is still pretty neat and will probably fool most kids and the majority of adults. My table also has a "well" built in which also helps conceal one of the "gizmos" at the end. I will bring this effect above to the 2011 FCM convention to show you all- most of the routines I will be doing "table hopping" will involve the handout of Gospel tracts or a short Gospel message of some sort. We will be arriving at noon on Tuesday at the 2011 FCM convention, then have to leave about 1pm on Wednesday, but then will be back by about 3pm on Thursday and staying through very late Friday night. So unfortunately due to prior teaching commitments, I cannot be there the whole time, but I think I will have enough time on Tuesday and Thursday nights, and all day Friday to annoy those eating in the IWU Caféteria. My church pastor, Dr. Mark Swank, is teaching a master's level class at IWU so he could be tagging along with me as we car pool back and forth from Kalamazoo. This is going to be great fun- so very much looking forward to the 2011 FCM convention! Duane Laflin, etc. have planned the typical zillion daily lectures which makes this week long convention so unique. http://www.fcm.org See you all there and be sure to bring your favorite close up routines to show/share with everyone eating during the lunch and dinner hours in the IWU Caféteria! A great place to try stuff out, ask for feedback, or just to show other FCMers what has worked for you table hopping at Christian banquets or wherever. |

I'll do close-up magic in the dining hall from time to time during the convention, sure! Everything I do may not have a gospel application to it, as I am mostly an entertainer who is a Christian instead of a Christian entertainer.
I don't work restaurants normally, but close-up magic is my first love, anyway. This is gonna be fun! Looking forward to July more than ever! Carrie |

Carrie- fantastic! I remember you talking close-up about 1 or 2AM in early morning at the Laflin lecture last year- that was a great time. And, just so you know, I would not consider your "egg bag" routine as only stage magic- (hint hint- you should do yours)- I consider "close up" to be any thing of any size that can be done at a Caféteria table. I really don't do much cards or coins- my goofy close-up almost always involves small props (such as Dean's Box). Thanks for joining us in our close-up parade--- I should be doing my first stint on Tuesday night in the Caféteria. I'm sure you've been at the Legion Hall at Abbott's where people feel free to do stuff at the tables while eating their hot dogs- that's the fun informal atmosphere I kinda am hoping for at FCM Caféteria- plus it gives us all an excuse to go around table to table and meet everyone.

Sounds great, wish I was going. Maybe one of these days I will make it to an FCM convention. Have been a member of the Los Angeles chapter for several years (except this one) but never made it to a convention... yet. The table hopping option would be really cool too. I have been working on a 2 effect routine using Hopping Halves and an effect from Aldo called 5 card mystery. I talk about the "saying", that is actually a verse in the Old Testament (Job 1:21), which says The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. I do the Hopping Halves as a demonstration of giving and the 5 card mystery trick as a demonstration of taking away. Hmm maybe I will try to put up a little youtube video of what I came up with and post it here somewhere. Anyways, Have fun all that are going!

The new lecture schedule has been updated on http://www.fcm.org for the 2011 convention- WOW. Probably over 15 lectures a day on average in the various catagories- unbelievable. In the "Magic" catagory, lectures already scheduled for Aaron Gillam, Gary Barker, Duane Laflin, Dave Mitchell, Jim Austin Rory Johnston, David Laflin, William Jarvis, David Ginn, Duane Ott, Barry Mitchell, Rickey Henson, Jeff Arnold, Joey and Alexandra Evans, Paul Ricksecker, Steve Varro, Jack Alexander, Oz and Wilde, Jack Markley, David McMichael, Frank Johnson, and Nathan Roberts. WOW WOW WOW WOW No other magic convention in the U.S. has this many lectures so inexpensively.

I talked to President Del Wilson about this via email- we will in 2012 be having designated "close up" dinner tables- so the folks sitting there know they might be approached to watch magic. Then the performer will feel less ackward asking "do you what to see a trick?" I pledge to do this myself, I chickened out in 2011 because everyone looked so happy eating in the IWU Caféteria and I really did not want to bother anyone.

A certain draw back in the thinking is the place is a buffet...normally walk around magic in dining establishments happens when patrons are waiting for food. So maybe we seek. Different venue...like in the area where the balloon classes were held. Ther are a lot of tables there...so in those long breaks when folks are cruising the dealers' area...maybe that is the time to do close up shows...informal...draw a crowd type thing...as opposed to walking up to table where folks have their food already. Something to consider. But I agree...most folks use dining time to chat with friends.

That's a good idea too- have close up tables in the dealers' rooms- if there is room in there someplace. I just really like the idea of folks being comfortable doing stuff informally while hanging out. At Abbott's, last Friday night for example, I saw one of the best "shows" of the entire convention done on the street after midnight right outside of the Five Star Pizza shop on the sidewalk. A young man (probably about age 25)put on an amazing street show- and none of us knew even who he was. Or over at the nearby Colon American Legion Hall, there is pretty much magic going on non-stop at the tables from 10pm on. So if a guy has a really neat card trick to share, he has a venue to do it. I believe some FCMers may have worked up some really nice close up routines involving the Gospel (like Del Wilson's use of the "Jumping Gems")- so I will make a better effort in 2012 to get this going someplace during the FCM convention.
