Occult Magic : An Introduction by Freddie Valentine
Price: £15 Available from http://www.unleashyourdreams.co.uk/Unlea......ine.html This book isn't a book of tricks or even a book of techniques but instead is a manual for putting together a full evening of strange and spooky, bizarre entertainment. I was really impressed with this book and it really got me thinking. Freddie starts off by looking at your character, something that is very important for any performer but all the more so for someone looking to perform this kind of material convincingly. I thought that this section was the best and most important in the whole book. He talks about how to build your character and work on a solid back story for the character to make them believable. The book then looks at the use of props and how they can be used to enhance the atmosphere and the performance that you're giving. Freddie also gives some example of props that he uses and offers suggestions for the sorts of things that you too could use. A very good introduction is given into various forms of divination, such as the tarot, runes, palm reading and of course the old favourite, the ouija board along with a number of others. The book finishes off nicely by Freddie walking the reader through the structure of Freddie's own performances, giving you a real insight into how all the little building blocks that you've been reading about come together. All in all, this is a great book on a subject that's very rarely tackled well for the magician. If you do so already or are even vaguely interested in this sort of entertainment then this book is a real must.
