One has a chance of buying a single ticket in one of two lotteries. The two lotteries have IDENTICAL PRIZE AMOUNTS and the tickets COST THE SAME. A ticket for the first lottery has a 50% chance of winning. (It doesn't have to be 50%, but assume it is something meaningfully different from zero ... like 40% or 20% or even 5%). A ticket for the second lottery has a 0.0000001% chance of winning. In this situation, I think my only sensible options are to purchase a ticket for the first lottery (if I feel lucky, feel like gambling) or else sit the lotteries out entirely. Buying a ticket for the second lottery would be a waste.

In your first lottery, what really happens is you have a 50% chance of getting the exact same prize regardless of whether you buy the ticket or not. So to the extent that who wins is relevant to whether the purchase is "wasted," then your vote is just as wasted when it's cast for a major party candidate.

Whether it means anything or not it still isn't fun when third parties made up almost 4% of the total popular votes in 2000 and did not get a single electoral vote.
Would it have made a difference if they'd gotten, say 1 or 2 electoral votes? No. But it still feels shady.

The thing is, we're just talking here. Nothing any of us say on this or any other thread is going to change the world.
I respect your opinions, and I enjoy voicing mine. But this forum is entertainment for me. This is where I go to take a break from homework and things that actually effect my life.

The things we discus here do (actually) affect your life. Education and realization is what it takes to correct problems we have. That will change the world. Every little bit helps. Have a good time!

They are what change the world. Politicians are people. World leaders are people. To throw in Hitler in a bit of a different/non name calling sense the dude was just that, a DUDE. A man. He made a difference. William Wallace, the Founders of our country or any country for that matter. Betsy Ross, Amelia Earhart, Joan of Arc and thousand and thousand of more were just PEOPLE. Often SINGLE people like Ghandi or Martin Luther King Jr. were men with huge ideas and a determination to get them through.

But none of those people did any of those things by posting on a forum about magic.
I'm speaking of the medium, not the message.

The "blogosphere" is becoming sort of influential.
Sorry I didn't mean to sound offended, but I have always said one man can make a difference. I have never been a product of my environment, my environment has always been a product of me.

I understand. And I agree with the premise. I just try not to let anything that happens on here be a big enough deal to ruin my day over is all. I used to get ****ed about one little thing that somebody said on here and steam about it for a week. But I've decided that on the list of things that will impact my future, those things are not all that high.

Actually, MLK and Gandhi did post on magic forums. It's just that their posts got deleted.

I find it funny when I hear thinking like this, along with so much of the other thinking towards voting, like those who complain about those who don't vote, saying that if they don't vote the wrong guy will get in. Doesn't make much sense if people are not voting for the guy (or girl) they actually want, instead voting for someone they think has more of a chance. People say "if more people just voted for the "right" guy . . ." well, say the same thing about settling for one of the two party candidates. If more people voted for who they actually wanted instead of this "oh well" attitude, then maybe third parties would have a chance? Hell, the entire idea of voting for someone because they have more of a chance would seem completely counter to the entire idea of having a vote. Don't vote for someone unless they are worth voting for. Not that it'll makes much of a difference any way.

Perhaps back on topic, from the Atlas Shrugged production:
STRIKERS, Did the critics win? Will Atlas parts 2 & 3 get made? Will John Aglialoro go on strike? In an interview this week with the LA Times, our hero, John Aglialoro was quoted as saying: "Critics, you won... I’m having deep second thoughts on why I should do Part 2." John Aglialoro going on strike!? NOT. GOING. TO. HAPPEN. Yesterday, the Hollywood reporter brought the story to a head citing John "I've got to give it to the critics. They won this battle, but they will not win the war. The message has been told in Part 1, and it will be told in Parts 2 and 3." John Aglialoro will not be stopped. And... neither will the message. ========== NOT. DONE. YET. TV... here we come. Not that kind of TV. Commercials. Yep. This fight isn't over by a long shot. Whether the mainstream media networks like it or not, we're on TV. I bet you can guess which networks are approving our spots and which aren't. (http://bit.ly/k6MDLP) Now THAT'S the free market. Well done. Of course, we support their right to say "no" to our ads, or any ads for that matter, for whatever reason they see fit but... you be the judge... would you disapprove our ad?
