Is the JW grip mentioned anywhere in Bobo?

Do yourself a favor and head on over to lybrary.com and pick up Curtis Kam's Pocketbook. It's a great guide filled with advice on what sleights to learn (and where to learn them), as well as how you should approach the classics like Bobo's and Expert Coin Magic. There's advice on muscle passing, palming, and just about anything you'd really want to know about. It's the most useful book on coins I've picked up... honestly, more so than Bobo's itself.

You mean Lulu.com, right? I couldn't see the Pocketbook on Lybrary.com.

I have learned plenty of effects and as I do this as a past time and not a job I always go back to three plots:

My version of shell coins across by Roth. I have changed the way I make the second coin travel.

Lattas Fisted Copper silver

and a wild coin routine. I know many so whatever one takes my fancy.

These are the ones I do all the time. And maybe a coins through table.

Think about what you want to do and then do it until it is second nature.

Stick with the graciousness of Ben Salinas here as to his Modern Coin Magic 4-DVD set, it's great. That and the Bobo and Hay books mentioned by Hare should take you for miles and miles. I'm not a big gaff guy but they can be fun and offer some trap doors to some amazing magic but take my advice and learn the sleights well first and foremost, then mix & match regular coins with gaff stuff and you'll have all you need and then some. When you get through playing a bit, pick yourselr out 4-5 effects you like and work on perfecting them until you can do it in your sleep and just do those for specsa and that will be all yo need. Just be very good at a few effects and you'll be pretty good at this stuff and save yourself a lot of headache and cash. Smile

in general, SICK is a wonderful DVD but definitely a few floors up for you at this point.
It's nice to work at and be inspired by but the real work is work, really and then some.

You have some good hardware already, you can do tons of stuff with that. I can do a lot of effects but usually only do 3-4 of them tops, the few I like doing the most. They are always more than enough to amaze anywhere, anytime. I can admire but I don't chase every sparkle, evry cute trinket any more, so glad I've gotten to that point, it is a point of higher perspective as to this & that, along with realizing what I have in my own backpocket already. Smile Enjoy the journey.

Oh, and Welcome to the Café FEZ. Smile

Thank you very much for the warm welcome Mb217! I will use Mr. Salinas DVDs and learn the basics now until I can "master" them! I usually do coins across in my routines as well as coins though glass amongst others. However, I have a lot of room for improvement and hopefully Mr. Salina's generous gift will help me do just that! Thanks a lot for your help!

Fez,

As another coin student, let me make a recommendation that may save you some money. Look carefully for used copies of the books and DVDs you want for your collection. By hunting all the usual places, like ebay, Amazon used book sellers, etc., I found a number of the recommended books at a fraction of the new or even 'normal used' cost. My hardback Bobo and Hay books were found this way. I even found a like brand-new first edition of David Roth's Expert Coin Magic being sold at the same price as newer used editions - that is my home run I guess.

One thing I won't do is buy any bootlegged items - which are usually identifiable by the price and location. But I have picked up several good used magic DVDs that I wanted by hunting a bit. And of course, if I didn't find it after a reasonable search, I bought it new, the Ben Salinas Modern Coin Magic DVDs as an example.

Also be sure to check out Vinny Marini's site at vinnymarini.com. He has some great downloads available from some great coin magicians who are active here on the Café, and they are bargain learning tools. Vinny, Tim Feher, Marion Boykin and others have been extremely generous with help and encouragement.

Anyway, you can spend a fortune on reference materials and while it is all worth it, if I can limit it to a small fortune rather than a big one that leaves more to spend on....coins and gaffs! Smile

Thank you very much for your help! I do look around a lot on Ebay and Amazon, infact I pick of most of my books from Amazon. As for bootleg material, I will never do that. I know the creators work hard and I personally wouldn't want years of my work being sold for a quarter of the price!

And I know what you mean, there are so many choices as far as DVDs, books, gaffs etc, I wish I could by it all (one can dream)! I am currently saving up for a Triple Threat set! Again thanks for your help!

In response to your earlier question, I would highly recommend Metal as a good general coin DVD by Eric Jones. Bobo's is an amazing resource and one you will often refer to. Good luck and enjoy.

Thank you very much and I will look into Metal. I had a conversation with Eric Jones over the phone, he is a very intelligent and talented man!

Thank you mavericklancer, I will check out the Pocketbook. I do tend to find it harder to learn from books however mostly because I'm more of a visual learner. But again, I will check it out. Thanks again!

Boydy, any chance you can send me a link to the Lattas Fisted Copper silver? I couldn't find it online. Thanks again!

I wish to congratulate Ben Salinas for his generous offer of a very impressive work.

I'm surprised not to see Richard Kaufman's Coin Magic and David Roth Expert Coin Magic in any of the posts.

Mike Rubinstein's Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights is an exceptional reference for magicians concerned with moves adapted to the situations they reach at a given time.

The series of the New York Coin Magic Seminar will, in my opinion go down in history.

Curtis Kam's Palms of Steel, Fists of Fury ... series also deserve to be put forward.

... because, after these, there is still a lot to discover!

Hello Mr. Lawrence O,

I too want to thank and congratulate Mr. Salinas for his generosity. David Roth's Expert Coin Magic was mentioned a few times throughout the thread, but Richard Kaufman's Coin Magic is something I will check out. I looked at some of the material from the New York Coin Magic Series and I really like it. And yes, there is still a lot to discover! I've just seen the tip of the ice berg! Thank you for your help!

Mr.Salinas, I just recieved the DVD and let me say: it is AWESOME! I have already learned so many sleights which I never knew existed. It is like the Mecca of sleights. Again I want to thank you for your generosity! I would recommend this DVD set to anyone that is interested in coin magic. It covers sleights for beginners as well as more complicated ones for more advanced magicians. It is a MUST have for anyone! Thanks again Ben Salinas!

OK Fez,

Now it seems you have become somewhat of a community project here on the Café.

Go learn young man! And post some videos when you feel somewhat competent.

Oh, a bit of advice ... It is fun to learn a wide variety of tricks, but IMHO it is far better to get really good at just a few. Go find what works best for your style of magic.

Regards

Alan

Sounds like you already have enough to keep you busy for awhile, but I'll just reiterate what others have said about Eric Jones's work using the gaffs you already own. In my mind, there is no better coin effect than his Oxy Clean effect, which is taught on his An Extension of Me DVD set, along with Fire Coins and other routines that use your gaffs. The great thing is, the routines really aren't that hard to do, by coin magic standards, but they look phenomenal.
Now appearing nightly in my basement.

Thank you very much! And I agree with you; I'd rather "master" a few tricks than to be a jack of all trades (or in this case, tricks)!
