Hello,
I was wondering where I could buy a good set of lock picks. I thought I could try my local magic stores but they only had books on how to use lock picks but not picks...I tried a few online magic dealers but still had the same problem. I found some other places online but they didn't look too trustworthy. Thanks for your help, KJ |

Try Cannon's Great Escapes (www.cannonsgreatescapes.net)
Most places will not sell lock picks to someone if they are not a licensed locksmith. I know the Cannon's will sell them, but you have to either supply your locksmith ID number or your magic organization (IBM or SAM) membership number. Margarette
The only stupid question is the one not asked.

You could also try Paladin Press, they sell books and tools among other things...

Just be careful on the lock picks, some police consider them to be burglar tools. As to where to buy lock picks, search the net and I beleive there is or was a place called Steve Arnolds Gun Room.

Get a catalog from Bud K. They sell mostly knives and swords but I saw several lock picks in their latest catalog for a pretty decent price.
It doesn't look like they require any locksmithing IDs or anything. I thought about getting a set myself. Good luck! http://www.budkww.com/ |

Also, it's a felony in some places to have them. In Chicago it is.

You may be better off in the long run, to make friends with a locksmith that can set double, or custom, shear lines on your equipment. Just a thought.
Run a search for: Lockpicking for Magicians, I think by Dave Powell? I have it and it's very expensive for what you get. The book comes with a tension tool, an s rake and a pick. The book and pick kept together as well as a member ID in a magic club will cover you with the law, in a few additional states. In California, it is a crime to posess the tools "with the intent to commit a crime." As long as there is a legitimate reason and no "intent" it is ok here. Check you local laws and explain the reasons to have them. Some departments may issue a "letter" to keep with you, while you are performing.
...think not that all wisdom is in your school. You may have studied other paths, but, it is important to remember that no matter who you are or where you come from, there is always more to learn.

Another source of lock picks is a Police Supply Store. They sell all sorts of interesting stuff.
Note: that simply having the picks is useless. It takes quite a bit of time to learn to use them and the literature I have seen on the topic have been pathetic. Side note: Not that I am an escape expert..but, I don't think that many (if any escapes) actually reply on picking locks. Jeff
