I've been a magician for 40 years, and am embarrassed to say that I have never attended a magic convention so I am a newbie in the borderline mystical ways of such gatherings.
I am considering attending Abbott's 74th Get Together this year, and would like to bring my 10 year old son who is very into magic. What do you think about the appropriateness of a 10 year old (with a very long attention span and deep interest) attending the Get Together? |

Of course. In general, Magic has remained a Family Event, certainly the major conventions are, and keep all content appropriate for all. He will love it.

Abbott's is a great first choice. There is a lot of interaciton with performers, relaxed atomosphere and small town charm. It is much better than going to a big city and worrying about the hotel and such. If you decide to camp, you can even save a few bucks.
I really think you will like it. Richard

I would have to say Abbott's is THE convention to take your kids to. This will be my 19th consecutive Get-Together. I have daughters 23,22 and 16 years old. They have been to everyone with my wife and I (obviously the 16 year old has only been to 16, but she has grown up there). Some of our best family friends are people we met at the get togethers. My kids say they have 200 aunts and uncles during that week. Colon, MI is a great small town, check out the websites. If you decide to come out to enjoy the week, I would try to stay as close to Colon as possible, if you are campers that would be a good choice , although I am no expert in that area. There are plenty of activities during Magic Week in colon , but it is by no means rushed or hurried. The 4 days could probably be pushed into 2 and a half days ( except for the 4 full evening shows) but people enjoy the relaxed pace and getting to visit with old friends and meet new ones. Bottomline is I would say it would be a great convention for you to attend , and the best choice if you wanted to bring your son to a convention.

Rich and Gerry have got it right! A great family event. This will be my 34th year without missing one. (I guess I'm getting old!). I'd only add that Five Star Pizza stays open most of the night to give the young folks a safe place to hang out (and the pizza is great). Hope to see you all in August.

The Abbott's get together is only part of the magic week celebration in Colon Mi. Since 2009 magic week has been celebrated all over town, and it is a very family friendly event. Be sure to join in on the pizza eating contest at the 5 star pizzeria, watch the busking competition on the streets of Colon, and all of the free events sponsored by FAB magic. Getting accomodations will be a challenge, so make reservations early.

We usually put out a Compendium and a Colon event schedule in July which tries to cover all events, trouble is things get added at the last possible moments and sometimes they are pretty big factors (IE Franz Harary lecture couple years back). Also some things are never added because the info never makes it to us (Beggers Alley for instance). One year the Amish had a huge cookout to raise money that was awesome, couldn't take any pictures of it but it just popped up and wasn't on any schedule.
I think that's what makes this event special and fun, people may tell you what to expect but the truth is you never know what to expect. Very hard to categorize and/or put borders on this event (IE where does the festival end and the magic begin, city events, local events, business events, etc). All the events are family friendly in my opinion. |

I have seen lots of kids in Curly's bar for their closeup competition.

Last year I brought my 4 and 5 year old the year before I brought just the older of the two. I only did fri. and sat. You have to know their attention span. I am very into not disturbing other peoples days. Your son is older so the attention span is probably greater than my two. I miss a lot of what is said in the lectures which they find boring. The is a very relaxed convention and a very nice convention to introduce them to magic. My now 6 yr old is very versed already in split fan productions and silk magic. Hope to see you there.

We look forward to seeing you all...what a great time it will be - between FAB & Abbott's you won't ever see this much magic in a four day period - period!
