This TEDTalk from the puppet troupe Handspring Puppet Company features a jaw-dropping horse puppet (around 9:16) that is so expertly made and controlled you have to keep reminding yourself that this isn't an animal:

"To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time." "The dog did nothing in the night-time." "That was the curious incident," remarked Sherlock Holmes. |

Well, other than that. And the guy with the stick in his head. But other than those things....

That was just stunningly beautiful. I forgot the puppeteers in 20 seconds. Bravo!

As an owner of three horses I can say that they got it right! I especially liked it when he was trying to describe the articulation of the front legs and the horse tried to nibble on him: they nailed that one!
That's spectacular! |

WOW! is all I can say.
They did an Awesome job making the subtle movements of a Living Horse. The Illusion of a real horse on stage was enhanced with interaction of the two humans on stage. A good lesson for all of us in performing our Magic. Good acting will enhance good Magic as well as good Puppetry. Thanks for this excellent video. Iven

The beauty of these works is that they convey those things in outstandingly beautiful ways, but at the same time relishing in the fact that these are made from VERY simple materials, and by basic construction. Puppetry is as much about the puppeteer, as the puppet.

I will grant both of your points of view. I was simply responding to panlives who said; "You have to keep reminding yourself that this isn't an animal."
