Just seen Bending the Real by Jay Sankey at The Merchant of Magic (http://www.magicshop.co.uk) Looks like a new psychological direction for Sankey? Looking at the REAL work as opposed to just tricks.

He talks about the project http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUR8WpgwcUQ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpVC4EAT434

'Bending' is about creating dream moments, inspiring people to open their eyes - It's a cool idea.

As for the content, the DVD has a large collection of ‘bending tips’ + the techniques and 25 'bends' from as many different psychological angles as possible. There are visual ends, audio bends, tactile bends and conceptual bends.

Because bending celebrates deception as a social activity, the bends reflect a fascinating range of social functions. suggests, such as flirting, impressing, confusing, amusing, shocking and more.

He defines his 'bends' as ‘dropping the inexplicable’ into an everyday situation, with stuff you would normally find lying around at school, work, a house party, diner, coffee shop, etc.

The Merchant of Magic is giving a second, limited edition, bonus booklet of short essays and effects with pre-orders.

Certain kinds of information are better suited to different mediums. So, while the bending tips and the techniques to the 25 bends work well on video, my more in-depth thinking around the psychology and philosophy of bending is better suited to the printed word.

Here are some of the subjects discussed;

*Ways of drawing attention to a bend without saying a word
*Sharing a bend without trying to ‘get’ anything
*How to really greet other people
*What to say when they ask ‘How did you do it?’
*Ah, Ha and Aha (3 profound experiences)
*The power of surprise
*Bending as a form of reminding
*Connecting through shock
*Non-Framing and avoiding suspicion
*Witnessing rather than performing
*Mystery as a social activity
*Tightropes and waterfalls
*How, Why and What (questions raised by surprise)

I've never been a massive Sankey fan in the past, but this looks really interesting.. Thoughts people?

That's quick Dee, I only put the vids up on the site last night Smile

Bending the Real launches for Pre-orders in 35 minutes time.

I'll post a full trailer video as soon as it launches.

From a personal perspective without my dealers hat on, I agree with a lot Sankey says here, especially the difference between Ah, Ha and Aha. I greatly enjoys Gerards 'The Process' recently and as you can imagine spending a lot of time at the shop, I'm drowning in magic tricks, so developing the magician I am already, is a much more rewarding experience for me at the moment.

I know you love your needle thru arm style magic, so I'd be interested in your thoughts on 'connecting through shock'

I'm always in two minds about Sankey's releases, sometimes he gets it really, really right but sometimes he gets it badly wrong.
I hope this is one of the occasions when he gets it right because this project does look cool.

It does seem that bend just means trick which seems a little pretentious but maybe I'm wrong.

I really respect Jay Sankey as a creator but I don't think he should release every little idea he thinks of as to me some of them just don't cut it.

Still undecided about getting this.

You can say the above about just ANY creator out there.

Anyway, I'm psyched for the release. I'm putting my pre-order in.

I would have to respectfully disagree. Jay is a fantastic creator, performer and lecturer... but I would rate Ammar, Wilson, Harlam and Lorayne as being more consistent in quality (I have tried to name artists with a fairly high output). Jay has IMHO released some stuff that is definitely more 'concept' than worked material
I am looking forward to this, but will wait for a review first. When you get it, please share your opinion.

BTW, Front Row is one of my favorite DVDs

Been asked in a LOT of emails so thought I would share here too.

The price at http://www.magicshop.co.uk for pre-orders included UK Tax.

International orders outside of Europe get 20% of the price refunded back to them as they don't pay UK tax.

Hope this helps

Hi all

Yes I agree with D, this does look like a focus on adding psychological context and meaning to magic. Possible a move away from being a trick factory

Asked Dominic about it at The Merchant of Magic and he said he is expecting this to be a pretty big release for Sankey and quite an important one. Told it would be a few weeks before copies go out to everyone tat pre-orders, but that they will get a second book with the DVD that later customers would not be able to order.

Looks good

All the best

Love Jay, the only bad thing ive ever seen of his was Pulp fiction, his DVD's are always jam packed with usable effects and presented in a non cringe worthy fashion!

Defo picking this up!

Props to Jay!

Can't wait to get my copy! The trailer looks seriously sweet... anyone that attending the Bending The Real youtube release party will know just how invigorating and inspirational the concept of bending really is. We were all tossing great ideas back and forth. Made me all the more excited!

Reposting after being directed here from a separate thread I started:

In a recent video, Jay explains some of the equipment included in this "new" project.
Sure sounds like he's just cleaning out his closet of overstock / leftovers:

Vanishink
Descendent
HiJacked
Zero Gravity

Maybe not a bad price for a "best of" package deal, but this was pitched as a "new" project.

Link to his video: http://www.youtube.com/bendingthereal#p/u/0/zj5fBZzzQFQ

I'm all for an interesting discussion of "in-depth thinking around the psychology and philosophy of bending", and the above effects may be tried and true items to provide the right context for that discussion.

That said, is the definition above for "bends" really any different than the existing category of "magic with ordinary objects"?

Don't get me wrong... I'm not trying to bash -- I've got a TON of Sankey material... I'm just trying to filter out what (at the moment) sounds like a lot of hype and window dressing (even for Sankey) wrapped around this release.

Ok... so he explains (somewhat) here:
http://www.youtube.com/bendingthereal#p/u/1/uvw2cyzgV4g

I'm still not so sure there's a real difference beyond describing a presentation style (or lack thereof).

Being able to recycle your ideas, repackage them and sell them as new material is the most valuable tool in marketing.
Jay Sankey is a master of this.

Oh ... so this is actually a real DVD?

I had the the promo email saying it would be open for pre-orders on April Fools Day and watched a bit of the promo video where Jay was talking about the difference between being a magician and being a bender - or something like that.

I never even considered the possibility that it might be a genuine product!

Here's a complete breakdown of the effects included on the DVD

.PIROUETTE
One minute prep time with a plastic spoon = an awesome, extremely visual
deception + souvenir. Perfect bend for the school Caféteria or work lunch
room.

2.RECONNECTION
Wonderfully minimal handling to create bend of snapping the tab off any
soda or beer can and immediately reattaching it. (And yes, your hands are
emtpy.) Perfect party bend.

3.VANISHINK
Make a sharpie marker vanish with your sleeves up. Perform it in the
nude if you want. Insanely visual bend for school, work, bus stop, coffee
shop, anywhere.

4.PRIVATE PROPERTY
An extremely clever bend for obtaining the phone number of almost anybody.
Especially effective with attractive strangers in bars and clubs.

5.AIRBORNE
Very memorable 'conceptual bend' using a bottle and a borrowed dollar bill.
Reveals to witnesses just how narrow our problem-solving skills tend to
be.

6.SKIN DEEP
A small piece is snapped off the end of a wooden stir stick and a moment
later it appears inside a wrapped straw held tightly in someone's hand.
Killer way to 'make contact.'

7.DIGITAL
Powerful 'mind-over-muscles' handling for a bend involving ten borrowed
bills. Totally impromptu. You'll be messing minds with this crazy simple
bend at school, work, everywhere.

8.THE OFFERING
"Wanna piece of gum?" Great example of using a visually arresting bend as
a social tool.

9.REALITY BREAK
A totally impromptu, snapped + restored stir stick handling Jay's been
refining for 2 years. Direct, easy, the perfect coffee shop bend.

10.HIJACKED
The only bend involving playing cards on the entire BTR project. The
shortest distance between 4 cards and "Oh my God!"

11.TASTING IS BELIEVING
You already know plenty of surprising moments involving the eyes,
ears and hands. This shocker involves the taste buds. Perfect reminder to
your friends: you can't be trusted!

12.SWEET SURPRISE
Hundreds of grains of sugar from a freshly opened packet impossibly melt
through a dish. The very definition of 'organic.'

13.CORNERED
A hard-hitting psychic bend involving a torn corner from the freely
chosen page of a magazine.

14.WHEW!
While most deceptions create tension, this inventive bend works another
angle, and instead delivers overwhelming RELIEF.

15.ECHO
Mess with minds in diners, restaurants and fast food joints. Demonstrate a
spooky sympathy between a straw and the paper wrapper it usually wears.

16.SOUND EFFECT
Using just your two hands, create a wonderfully convincing audio
illusion, guaranteed to get laughs and groans. Another no prep,
'anywhere' bend.

17.STORM CLOUD
Cause a cloud of dust to appear in the room of an enemy (or a friend with
a good sense of humor.) You don't even have to be IN the room when the
bend hits.

18.DESCENDENT
One of the stand-out effects from Jay's acclaimed ‘Kaleidoscope’ DVD.
Absolutely perfect bend to share at work or school.

19.TOOLONG TEA
A jaw-dropping public bend created by Mike Skutt. Much more of an EVENT
than a 'trick.' It's not illegal, but when you share this bend in a
restaurant or coffee shop it's guaranteed to stop ALL conversation (while
you never say a single word.)

20.INSIDE JOB
Slam the cap of a plastic water bottle INSIDE the bottle and then
immediately hand it out to be examined.

21.ZERO GRAVITY
Exceptional tool + no-sleight handling to suspend almost any small,
borrowed object on a folded bill, take-out menu, page from a magazine,
paper napkin, almost anything you find in the space.

22.IN RED INK
If you are a 'natural performer' you are going to LOVE this old school
bend. Make as much or as little of it as you dare.

23.BURIED TREASURE
While paying for snacks at a convenience store, 'discover' a five dollar
bill inside a chocolate bar. Guaranteed to seriously mess with the minds
of your friends (and the guy at the cash) this awesome bend comes complete
with a killer 'real world' theatrical hook.

24.REMOTE CONTROL
The devious gimmick looks EXACTLY like something you would find in your
desk drawer, but the mentalism possibilities are endless. Jay combines
this lethal tool with the serial number of a borrowed bill with tremendous
'mind messing' results.

25.SHATTERED
Just how much fun can you have with a big ass rock and a friend's car
(without breaking the law?)
