The appeal of sideshow acts are that they're demonstrations of abilities that are beyond the capabilities of most people. In a way, they are the closest thing to real magic you will find. They don't appeal to all audiences, but with the right crowd, hammering a nail into the nose can instill a profound sense of amazement that goes deeper than most magic tricks.

How much does the nail in nose hurt, or do you do some fancy hypnotism (not asking for a secret by the way)?
Best regards, Tom

If done right, it's only unpleasant. No hypno.

Learning it can be a bit unpleasant as your body is adapting to having a foreign object inserted into it, but after that, there is no discomfort in doing it.

Yeah, but it's got to pierce the skin at the end of your nose. Surely that must hurt (it stings just pinching the end of your nose).
And then aren't you going to have like a third nostril or a scar on your nose? Best regards, Tom

There's no piercing involved. It goes straight back into the top of your throat. It's the same passageway that air goes through when you breathe.

I'm starting to wonder what this guy thinks blockhead is! Maybe he's thinking of something else?

I have seen someone hammer a nail into the tip of their nose and someone else do it with a power drill; not once did I mention blockhead!
(Oh, and I have a name.) Regards, Tom

Dear Guy With A Name,
But... the nail in the nose IS blockhead. Can anyone else back me up on how this is getting way more confusing than it needs to be? |

The Nail in the Nose act is called the human blockhead.....I don't know if it's the same name with the drill. Human Blockhead is simple, it does not hurt at all, at least for me. I guess I was so used to picking my nose at the time

If you've got to do the blockhead and swallow swordsat least take the time to polih your sword and nail wity 600 emery paper, the nail every timw.I'm assuming you already rounded the edges ath point of the nail with a mill file. Are we allowed to tell them what to disinfect there props with, again the nail before and after every use? First word starts with Z.

Constantine, I respectfully think you need a little correction. If you are using any kind of real sword, it should be nickel, (not chrome)plated, and only polished with a chamois. Any roughness, even fine grit marks, can trigger the gag reflex... Have you been doing this long?

I worked a sword and bayonett from about 1982 to '86.And I did all the smothing and rounding of the 3 K of C swords with a mill *** fill and emory paper, that was before thay were power buffed at a plating shop, nickel over copper. The Bayonett was smothed but not plated.Use emery cloth to keep the nail clean, and disinfect every thing with Zefrum Cloride.
UPDATE: March 12, 2004 I appologise to Slim. You should have ask if I'd done this lately.Nowdays , I'm told you can buy a proper sword readmade (where?). Relegate the above post to historical only.
