I have gone through quite a number of threads that have all had great information on agents. One thing that everyone says is a must is (when trying to pick up an agent) have promotional materials that do not list your contact information. However, no one seems to specify if the agencies contact information SHOULD be listed on the materials.

Meaning, do I send an agency materials with none of my contact information on them?

OR

Do I do a little homework and send an agency materials custom made for their agency, and list THEIR contact information directly on the materials?

Thanks!

I have used lots of agents over the years. While it is nor necessary to but their info on your material, most of them would appreciate it. It would be a good idea to talk to them and find out how they would like the info presented.

When first starting out with a new agent, I would give them material with no info on it and then after we built a rapport I would have their info added.

You can send the agency materials with your contact info on them. I do. I tell them that, should we be able to work something out, I'd be happy to have their contact info on materials given out by them. This tells them you are willing to work with them to get the job done. Many agents have had it with no rep/big ego acts that expect everything and are willing to do nothing.

I've always found it BEST to research the agencies I'd LIKE to work for...find out who they currently represent...contact a few of the acts they represent and find out if the performers are happy...and THEN make direct contact with the agent via phone. Follow that up with an appointment face to face...and see where it goes.

Be careful about anything "exclusive" until you really feel comfortable going there.

Hope this helps.

Agent-friendly promo information should be left blank (usually at the bottom or bottom corner) and the agency will add their own contact info to your promo or reproduce it as they see fit.

So on something like a DVD, do agents put their own information on the label with a sticker or something? Or is it easier for them to just burn the disk and create their own label?

Leave it blank.
If anything they'll stick a label with their information on it when they send it to the client.

Some entertainers even have an agent friendly website without your contact info.

There is no such thing as agent friendly nowadays. If people want to contact you then they will just google your name.

Sure there is such a thing as agent friendly. I have a regular website and an agent friendly website alond with agent friendly material. Yes someone can google you, but you better believe an agent won't promote you or work with you if you are going to try to steal business from them.

If they do contact you but found you through the agency, always have them contact the agency. That's my thought on that. I don't want to bite the hand that feeds me.

I'm not saying you should cut them out but even if you have a different site just for agents all the client has to do is google your name.

I just ask clients where they saw me perform and if it was at an event that an agent hired me for then I will book it and send the agent their comission.

But nowadays, if a client wants to contact you directly then they will.

And if an agent ever got mad because someone contacts me directly then I will cut the agency off because it shows a lack of trust.

Speaker agencies are more trustworthy because they know the speaker has to talk with the client directly so it doesn't bother them one bit.

Benji makes a point, it is tough to be invisible on the net. It really is. I mean you spend all the time in the world when you start trying to get a presance, and unless an agent can keep you sufficently busy then you have to have some sort of presance. Therefore they can Google you.

You do need to develop a certain amount of trust.
