I was wondering if anyone might know whether there is anyone currently manufacturing the pen gimmick necessary for Malini's Bill in the Egg routine.

Don't know, but last year I sold mine on the big auction site. I think it is called "Card in Egg Pen".

I believe Malini actually used a gimmicked wand, at least that's what I recall from David Chavert's Bill in Lemon Book.

I was looking around on-line and found a photo on Ben Robinson's website of Malini's pen that he used for this. First time I saw this was on Paul Daniel's Malini video.
Pete, sorry I missed that one! Timing's everything. Rick

I just reviewed the section on Malini's routine in The Bill in Lemon Book and in there David states quite plainly that Malini used a wand and not a pen. The wands were originally sold as "CARD in Egg" gimmicks and David goes on to mention that "Russ Walsh, of 'Vanishing Cane' fame, first broke into the magic business manufacturing a hollow fountain pen that would load a card in an egg."
For Ben Robinson's sake I do sincerely hope that his pen did in fact belong to Malini, as it seems like that would be a pricey item, but I do not believe Malini ever used it for purposes of loading a bill in an egg. However this is wholly off topic and rather superfluous as per your initial post. To my knowledge there is nothing being manufactured like this today, there was a similar item for sale a few years back but is no longer being manufactured. I would suggest simply making your own gimmicked pen. It wouldn't even have to be an actual pen, a hollow tube with a pen cap on it would suffice. |

Hi, Mac.
After my initial post, I did some digging around in Google and found some photos of the Russ Walsh pen; it looks different from the Malini pen that Robinson has on his site. I actually just got hold of a copy of the Malini book by Vernon, and it too says that he used a wand. However, it might make sense that at some point Malini obtained one of the pens once they became available. Just a guess on my part obviously... As for making my own, I'm already ahead of you on that one. Picked up some brass tubing at Lowes, doing work on it with some steel wool, epoxy, and a Dremel...we'll see what I can make of it.

Interesting, I'd like to take a look at those Walsh pens.
If you wanted to be really sneaky you should either make a fake pen that matches a real pen, or make a real a pen to match your fake one. This way some can use the pen to sign the bill therefore "examining" the pen, of course you would have to switch the pens out but that's a simple matter as no one would ever suspect that. Scotty York had a similar type of pen he used to switch cigarettes. And by the way don't be fooled by the name of the gimmick, stretch your imagination and you'll see you can use a gimmick like this to load just about anything. |

I purchased the last Russ Walsh Bill to Egg Pen many years ago from Abbott's, they use to make them as well. They also made the Bill in Egg Wand, and I believe they still do offer this for sale.
The Pen was fashioned after the old closed fountain pen, as noted with some thinking it is possible to make one out of pens offered today. No brass tubing needed, just a barrel with a slid device. |
