Effect by : J.Prager
Mind Veil I was one of the five to get a review of this, and I'm glad I did. I use a few peeks when I do mentalism and this interested me right away when I opened the pdf. It's 3 pages, so this doesn't deserve a HUGE review. This does not use a ORIGINAL method/principle for mentalist but J.Prager gives a nice method and peek that I think is worth trying. I will be using this. The peek is smooth and simple and within the grasp of any conjurer/mentalist. There is a unlisted Youtube link provided within the PDF that will show you the peek in motion. Smooth. There is a gimmick that you can buy for very cheap and he provides what store you can get it at. No construction needed which is a plus. The handling is what makes this fly. I do want to add there is no bias towards this review. I don't know him in anyway, I just got to review it. And I approve of it. I've been looking for a nice peek and this is my cup of tea. Cheers. |

For those who do not know what "Mind Veil" is, here is a description in the creator's own words:
"Face your spectator and ask him or her to draw something in a notepad while you hold it without looking. You close it, put it away and can immediately reveal the drawing. No gimmicks, no impression devices, nothing—just a notepad that you can easily get and a marker." Quote:
On 2011-04-05 01:54, Blindside785 wrote: Actually, Mr. Prager does say that he had to alter the size of the notepad he uses. It may have been a good idea to explain specifically how this was done. It's cool how José has exploited a feature that has been hiding in plain sight. I find it hard to believe that someone else hasn't already done this. Shall I put on my helmet before Crediting Wars II breaks out? He does give credit to other performers but doesn't cite the name of any specific effects. So I'm not sure how close this version comes to any of its predecessors. Señor Prager asks people to contact him if they have trouble finding the right pad. This is good since, so far, my Google searches have been unsuccessful. I think providing a link to a page of an online store may have been better. Quote:
The handling is what makes this fly. I think the handling could look a bit fishy to some. The performer's holding the notepad may lead people to erroneously think that he is simply paying attention to the pressure being exerted on the pad by the marker. I see no reason why the effect can't be done hands-off. Instead of flipping the pad open all the way, open it like a regular book and place it on a table in front of the spectator, with the appropriate side toward her. Turn your back and ask her to draw. Then announce, "I'm going to turn back around now. So, cover your drawing with your hand." After you turn back, say, "In fact, with your other hand, close the pad. That's right...you may remove your fingers. You know what? Let's just take the notepad out of play altogether..." You then take it and put it in your pocket. You could wrap a rubber band around it or seal it in an envelope first("So you know I can't peek.") but that may be gilding the lily. Full disclosure: I got my copy for free because I helped proofread it. |

Mind Veil by J. Prager
Available- http://www.mentalshockproductions.com/ Price- $9 Before going any further I will say that I got my copy for free, but I don't believe this has swayed my view as to how I feel about this release. What you get- A 3 page pdf manuscript which contains various photos along with the explanation aswell as a link to a video clip showing the Peek in action. Though short at only 3 pages, this is actually more than enough to fully explain the concept and you will be left with no doubt as to how to use this. Everything is well explained and the photos are clear... also the title page (cover) is brill, crazy stuff, I love the covers of his work. What is Mind Veil?- Basically this is a peek device, though their is no actual gimmick as J. Prager has come upon an item with certain characteristics that when combined with his methodolody/handling allows for a completely normal pad one moment and a peek device the next... there's nothing to hide as the pad is normal. My initial thoughts- Upon first learning this I had mixed feelings, first I thought it was very clever and sneaky, but at the same time I felt that the need to hold the item whilst they write/draw was a bit of a draw back as it's the type of thing that could bring to mind the idea of reading the noise when they write/draw on top of feeling the movements and the like. Of course I wouldn't know for sure until I got to play around with it so I went out to find the needed item. Once I got what was needed and made a slight adjustment (same thing J. Prager needed to do), I basically set off to a couple of the areas I hang out and began testing it out on some of the people I know as well as anyone who was up for having a weird experience. Thoughts after taking it for a test run- Ok my worries about people picking holes in the fact that I was holding the item whilst they were writing/drawing were for the most part not an issue. The method is simplicity itself and it really takes next to no effort to get from them writing/drawing to you knowing what it is, and it really is fair. I played around with various alternate handlings and it is definitely possible to have them write/draw whilst you are not holding it, and once I began doing it this way that's how it stayed... apart from when there was nothing to lean on, in those instances J. Pragers handling works like a charm (though it's still possible to do it hands off by having one person use the back of another to do the writing/drawing, thoughbi'd only recommend that for groups of 2). This is most definitely workable and does exactly what it is advertised to do. My overall opinion- Clever stuff, refilling is as simple as buying a new pad, nothing to replace other than when you need a new pad, works well and costs a fraction of the price of some of the other pads out there. Simple but effective. Pros- The pad is normal so nothing to hide or find. Easy to utilise. Clear full page peek. With J. Prager's handling it has great angles, though they are not quite as good if you allow them to do it without you holding on. Nicely priced, only $9. Cons- The fact that for the included handling you need to hold onto the pad whilst they draw/write. Nicely done J. Prager, this is some clever stuff, a great lil peek device. Cheers. |

Off the shelf notepad, if you buy the correct one then no prep required. Off the shelp marker pen. You're good to go.
Simple, direct way of obtaining information. Start clean finish clean. Nice thinking. |

Love the Tommy Pad but a good part of my life is spent trying to find the right pads online and off, so I'd hate to go through that with another effect. Those who recived/bought this, how much of a problem to find the pads in the US? Mind Guerrilla's comment on this has put me off a tad although from the start I've always believed in Jose and his work and it's great to see that, after one unfortunate yet instructive mistep that cast a short (in terms of duration) shadow, his great creativity is coming to blossom.

Those who recived/bought this, how much of a problem to find the pads in the US? I do not think that there might be any problems in finding a applicable pad! Just thoguht about it further and I came up with the idea to use whatever pad you can get your hands on and modify it for the use of José's peek if you - for whatever reasons - are not able to find one. Can't say openly what you need, but the "special extra" is available in every office store and it takes you abot five minutes to implement it to José's idea. But again: I do not think that it is hard to find a applicable pad no matter where you live! |

Here in the UK I think WH Smiths sell suitable pads and will check this out tomorrow.
I have yet to perform the routine but the beauty of the idea is that you can tailor the handling to what suits you and are comfortable with. Following on from the success of Liebrary Jose has certainly come up with another worthy contribution to our art. |

Here's my review of Mind Veil.
First I was disappointed: 3 pages of which one was the title page for $9? What kind of con is this Prager-guy? Is he kidding me? And the other 2 pages are filled with photo's? What the heck? Alright, I started reading and taking a closer look at the photo's. Mind veil is not a trick or routine or effect - it's a method. Prager sells a method for $9. That's a whole other thing than I thought it would be. Most pdf's which are on the market are new routines based on old methods. Mind Veil is a new method. This method is so very simple - why didn't I came up with it? This method doesn't need to be spread out on 50 pages with lots of blabla. Once you know the method, you can fit it into your own routines and you can do with it whatever you want. Is it worth $9? The currency I count with is the euro, $9 = € 6.29. A bit overpriced to be honest. €5 would be better ($7.15 - make it $7.50). Conclusion: clever thinking by J.Prager

IMO the $9 cost is, if anything, extremely reasonable -- if it had been my idea I would have charged a bit (but not much) more. Unlike other commodities (and I'm loathe to call a magic/mentalism method or secret a "comodity") its value is not in the number of pages of instructions, the cost of producing the "gimmick" (if there is one), or even the cleverness or creativity of the creator but in its VALUE TO THE PERFORMER WHO USES IT -- nothing more and nothing less. Although those other factors may enter into the determination of the selling price the REAL value is what it is worth to the performer. Conversely, something you'll never use -- no matter what you paid for it -- is worthless. Any and all other criteria are IMO of little or no consequence. Based on THAT standard, at $9 "Mind Veil" is one of the best bargains you're likely to find.

Dick is absolutely correct. The true worth of something is determined by its usefulness to an individual, which will vary greatly. In the case of knowledge, that usefulness can be quenching intellectual curiosity or sparking creativity. Or it canb be applying it to a real situation usch as performing.
Mileage will vary. However, in my case, MIND VEIL has proven of tremendous worth based on its usefulness as defined above. |

WOW, I just got this today and really like it. It is so simple and to the point that I can’t believe no one has thought of this until now!
I have played around with this and think that I like this better than my IMPs pads. No kidding! I also came up with a totally different handling from what is written in the E-book. I told J. Prager about it and he liked it very much and asked if I would like to include it in his E-book as an update. I told him that I would be happy if he included my thoughts. So you will now have another presentation for MindVeil. Mind Veil is a winner and a worker! Best Ray Noble |

It seems as if Josés basic and brilliant idea coverts more and more to a collection of great ideas.
The pads José sells are beautiful and extremly deceptive. As I wrote earlier I had the idea to modify whichever pad you want for the use of Josés method but my own pad is not half as good as his. So I recommend you buying some directly from the author! By the way, I hope that Ray's idea will find it's way into the ebook and we all will be updatet soon. Great work, highly recommended!!!! |

José - Thank you for this terrific idea!!!
Although I'm leaning towards purchasing some pads from José, I'd like to find a local source for pads I can use now and try it out first. And I look forward to the update as well with the additional handling ideas. HURRY!! --
PM me if you want to chat sometime.

Well, you may be right, but with all the imp pads and boards, you would really think that someone would have put it in print or sold the props by now.
As far as myself and others are concered, we never heard of this method. Ray |

My review from http://www.amirasideas.com
Review :Mind Veil by J.Prager Mr. Prager comes with a new idea. A new way to get information from a notepad. Price: U$9 in http://www.mentalshockproductions.com/ My opinion: Again José came up with a nice idea. Practical and very simple. This 5 page eBook cover the basic idea and other ones from other authors. Prager credits the old principle behind Mind Veil and give proper reference to other performers who use similar ideas in the past. A nice reading. Not a revolutionary idea but an intereting one. Rate: 8/10
