Here's the story, with a photo: http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2011/apr......r_040511

Pretty nice looking coins, don't you think? Think of the presentation possibilities...

Interesting! However, I would not want to have one as they are illegal.

Do you think that any one of the people in your audience could know of every coin on the planet?

Absolutely not.

Wait, where are you going with this, Lawrence...?

I wouldn't mind owning some "hot" coins myself! They look pretty good!

I vaguely remember reading about this years ago. I think the coins are beautiful, but not worth it in the long run.

While they're not legal tender, I fail to see how they're illegal. It appears that the "illegal" part is trying to pass them off as legal tender. Merely possessing them is OK.

I noticed the news report in mid-March (March 18) that the founder of NORFED, Bernard von NotHaus, was convicted of "making, possessing and selling his own coins". (Appeal pending.)

Quoting the Associated Press, "Federal prosecutors successfully argued that von NotHaus was, in fact, trying to pass off the silver coins as U.S. currency. Coming in denominations of 5, 10, 20, and 50, the Liberty Dollars also featured a dollar sign, the word "dollar" and the motto "Trust in God," similar to the "In God We Trust" that appears on U.S. coins."

Interesting coins; if I recall right, the reverse sides varied a good deal.

Any idea of the silver composition in these coins or the melt value?

Von NotHaus's appeal is doomed. This is settled law.

However, his craftsmanship is admirable. In a better world, he'd be offered a gig in the Treasury Department designing new U.S. currency. Clearly he has a knack.
