First of all, I must say I really like Pablo's thinking over an effect. In most of his works, the way he structures the effects around the psychology rather than the method pleases me a lot. He is worried about and describes the audience perceptions, the logical disconnection, what they will remember and, of course, the effect, method and even a possible dialogue, if you need a guidance scripting.
In Mysteries Anywhere 2 he works everything with this same methodology, and the strong point in this eBook is that every single effect is impromptu, things you can do right away, with borrowed objects. The book opens with a nice introduction by Kenton Knepper and a few words from the author. I like this “intro” part in books because sometimes it can show you a lot about the book and the author's thinking, and MA2 starts really promising. The effects: Divided into chapters, the effects are separated in three types: Spontaneous Mysteries, Techniques for Unexpected Performances and Suggestions. Spontaneous Mysteries • Time for Weird Things: I loved this idea and for me it’s a strong effect where synchronicity and mindreading take part with two watches. The use of time as the point of the experience makes it a powerful effect. • Freud Would Be Proud: Pablo uses a nice psychoanalysis technique that some of us maybe played as a game in childhood, where you make free associations after a given word, as a premise to a nice thought of card effect where you put the card in your pocket before it is thought. • PrecogRUNEtion: That's a good idea in making most part of the audience participate to create an effect. A few people create some symbols inspired by runes. The mentalist writes a prediction and one participant is given the task to randomly choose one symbol through elimination by throwing the papers and the last symbol left matches the prediction. • Essay in Performance: Ideas around important things on performances and how to work with it in a most effective way. • 3 Moments in Time: Although I liked a lot of effects in this book, this is my preferred. 3 Moments in Time is a great approach to Mental Epic so well constructed, not only the method, but mainly the structure and psychology. I really loved this gem. • Visual Mindreading: Pendulum effects are always appealing and in Visual Mindreading, Pablo gives a great use for this tool and how it could be used to explain in a visual way how to read a participant's mind. Another good way of involving the whole audience. Great idea! Techniques for Unexpected Performances • Open Hand Bend: That's a great method for a Spoon Bend with your hand opened. A great tool for the Metal Bending repertoire and a strong visual idea. • INYE Bend 1 and 2: Another great tool on Metal Bending with a coin and the help of the participant. As always, Pablo's construction of the effect makes it much bigger. • Amirá's OHHBP: A nice idea where the performer reveals the age and name of a participant's personal friend with a clever technique. • Essay on creativity: As in the other essays, Pablo gives some of his thoughts about creativity and how to approach ideas for effects. Suggestion • Palm Vein Suggestion: An experience of body control over your participant's hands veins. Something nice to introduce other effects. • Third Eye Suggestion: Another nice idea of suggestion where you get the participant to feel weird sensation in the middle of his forehead. • Essay on Suggestion and Dual Reality: Great thinking on how dual reality can work with suggestions. • Materialized Thought Suggestion: I liked the use of this suggestion a lot. That's a cool way of making the participant physically feel the thought inside the head before it is read. • Yawn Suggestion: Nice use of a known suggestion in order to enhance an effect. • J.A.V.: I like visualization effects a lot! That's an area I love to explore and with this one, Pablo creates a great visualization effect with a mindreading ending so good that the whole performance turns into a great experience for the participant. Overall For those who are looking for great effects you can do right away, impromptu, with borrowed objects and even no objects at all, I highly recommend Mysteries Anywhere 2. And for all I know, this is a limited edition of only 100 copies, so there's still a chance to get one at his website. As I said before, Pablo Amira is a great creator and he has a nice his way of thinking his effects. His worries about the psychology and the audience's experience may inspire you. At least it did for me! -- Mysteries Anywhere 2 Pablo Amirá $ 35 http://www.amirasideas.com/ -- Nice work, Pablo! Ale |

Each section is pure gold. If you like PKMB, his techniques are great. If you love suggestion based effects, you'll see plenty of new ideas here as well.

I see that Penguin has the book for $15. The ebook is $35, so I think I'll go retro and get the hardcopy book. Ahh, the feel of real paper in my hands.

I just received this, and sad to say, I'm dissapointed. First, it was really hard to follow. It was like someone who had some convoluted thoughts in their mind and then just spit them on a piece of paper. Second, it makes references to other sources and then only gives half the answer in the book. I feel like the effects are pointless unless I go study someone else's work first. The booklet is written in half thoughts. Frankly, it is like a first draft that barely captures the writers convoluted thoughts.

I finished reading it. What I have is Mysteries Anywhere. I just got it from Penguin Magic. Perhaps Mysteries Anywhere 2 is a different version. I am SO dissapointed with this, that I would never purchase anything from this person, and I really doubt I would ever purchase from Titanas who produced it. It is SO terrible I question the business ethics of anyone involved in this "so called" project. The booklet makes no sense, it is written in half thoughts that are vaguely related to some semblance of an effect. For example, at one point it says "close this book right now and get "Psychophysiological Thought Reading" by Banachek. (You can keep this book open)". It then doesn't explain this significant missing piece that needs to come from somewhere in the other referenced book. This sort of thing is throughout the booklet. TERRIBLE!

At least for me and several other performers around the globe these ideas are workers. If you want to discuss privately about Mysteries Anywhere, just contact me. Now, this thread is about Mysteries Anywhere 2 , another document, which has other effects and other approaches to "Anywhere Mentalism" Best

Sorry, my bad. I didn't realize they were two different items. Perhaps you are now doing so, but I would suggest you get someone who can do a good job of editing your work, not only for how it communicates, but for it's magic content. While I do some shows, I wouldn't consider myself a pro. When you reference someone else's work, it shouldn't be instead of fleshing out your own method. I probably missed what coulld have been a very good effect if I knew about what you referenced. It's like reading an article full of foreign words and not understanding what you read. I appreciate your pm, that was very kind of you.

Surely , in an aesthetic aspect, things could be better, but "Mysteries Anywhere" was my first eBook to the community, one that at the beginning was aimed to make donations to help families that lost everything (February 27, 2010) and for that reason I didn't take much time on that aspects. Some performer friends at the beginning ask me to raise the price, but I want to keep my first ePublication low price.
The eBooks was revised due the fact that my english is similar to the "Dalinian approach" but at the end is all about the material on there and I honestly believe that the ideas on there are worth the price. I know that there is value written on that pages. My years of experience with that material said me that and I really hope that you can read between the lines and found the principles and finesses embedded. Best

A new idea:
Recently, during one of the Skype session that I offer on my site with a fellow purchaser and performer, I realize that the routining and basic methodology of " Time for Weird Things " can be applied to smartphones. In this way you can create mindreading with any information from the phone (photo, song, note, list,etc...) with no added application or needed technology, just 2 smartphones and the steps explained on the original routine. Best

Hey all, Pablo was kind enough to allow me to win a copy of this a few weeks ago and there are some really great little ideas in here. I feel like most mentalists rely too much on their imp pads and gizmos anymore which is fine, but what happens when your gizmos fail or aren't around? This book is a direct answer, the answers are pretty darn good ones too. My personal favorite section is the one of suggestion ideas and idea overall would have to be the Materialized Thought Suggestion...it worked on me and I am typically not a great suggestion candidate. Be sure to check this out because it is definitely a good work!
Best Wishes, -Jakob |
