Hello Magic Café Customers,

Does anyone know where I can gain some knowledge of using a Topit while wearing a Tailcoat? I usually use a Topit sewed into a skirt suit and another sewn into a velvet jacket that come down below the waist, thus covering the Topit. But I am unsure how to wear the Topit if I am wearing a Tailcoat as a formal tailcoat finishes above the waist - so how do I stitch a Topit into it?

Does anyone know if there is a particular design for a Tailcoat Topit, or do I just sew it in higher up?

Is there any literature I can get hold of to learn how others have done it?

Hope you can help please.

Thank you.

With a tailcoat the magician usually uses a tail topit.

I would also recommend that you check out Jay Scott Berry. He performs in a "shorter" type of coat that would be similar to the cut of the front of a tail coat.

I agree with Bill, if you want to use a topit with a tailcoat then you should probably focus on using a topit that's been built into the tails. A traditional topit in a tailcoat would be exceptionally difficult (but not impossible) to use due to the fact that tail coats are cut away from the center of the torso (hence the nickname "cutaway coat"), and they're generally tailored for a snug fit as well. (I use a topit with a kilt jacket, so I know all too well the problems inherent with using a topit with a snug fitting jacket.)

Here's a classic clip of Fred Kaps making good use of a tails topit (watch the salt shaker @ :31-:33):

Tommy Wonder briefly covers the using of such a tailcoat topit in Vol. 2 of The Books of Wonder.

Hey, Pete, as I remember it was a Profonde, and it was a french word I believe. The story has it that way back when men wore tails coats they had a pocket built into the tails to receive the top hat when they were made to collaspes. They could go to the opera and put there hat between their legs.

The term has fallen away as some words do and noone knows what you are talking about by using that word. I guess it would be more acturately be termed a modified profonde. The term "Tail Topit" was what Howard Hale called his pocket and instruction booklet. Can't remember what General Grant called his tail pocket.

Pete is right, it is indeed a profonde. I used to perform the Pollock routine and used one for other things as well.

Also, I have used a topit made for vests in my tail coat as well. This one was not in the tail but in front, like a traditional topit. It works like a charm. I have recently taken to using the Bob Miller vest topit design.
