Hey there Café

not sure where this would posted so I thought I would start here.

other then a funken ring
or a flint flasher

what can I use to create some sparks

I like the funken ring best as it does not use flash cotten and sparkle additive however the funken rings I have seen are pretty cheezy!

is there a good one to get that will create a really big spark?

thanks for your help

Sam -

Do you know about "Makin' Sparks" by Sylvester the Jester?

If you don't, then google it.

It's one possibility.

That should be easy enough to build. Just find a box, have a piece of conduit or some power cord hanging out of it, paint it gray, paint on some fake toggle switches, and label it "DANGER: HIGH VOLTAGE".

I use Funken Rings intensively for my ghost trails. I've always stuck to the ones that say they are made in Germany, as apart from anything else the flint is replaceable which isn't the case with the Chinese ones. I've recently found the German made ones have the screw jammed into the barrel that holds the flint so tightly, it's impossible to remove. My latest supplier has been through all his stock and the screw is jammed in all of them. I'd love 'Makin Sparks' from Sylvester, but it looks too big for close up stuff. I'd like to contact whoever makes the Funken Ring to see whats going on, anyone have contact details?

The funken rings that Penguin and Madhatter are selling are called Flasher rings and I recently (May of 2021) bought a number of these. None of them worked because they were all missing the flint spring. A few of them had the flint and tiny screw loose in the package but none of them had anything in the barrel.

I was easily able to fix all of them by doing the following method without opening the metal case: poke a tiny flat screwdriver down the barrel to make sure nothing is stuck in the barrel. Turn the funken ring upside down and shake it to get any loose flint or screw to fall out and discard them.

Buy a cheap cigarette lighter from Dollar Tree (the Bic lighters have longer flints). Destructively pry open the Bic lighter and carefully remove the flint and the spring which is directly under its striker wheel.

Place the Bic flint into the funken barrel then place the Bic spring into the funken barrel. The spring will stick out above the funken device. Cut the spring so that it sticks out about 3/16 of an inch (5 mm) above the funken device. Then use duck tape (cut piece about half inch wide by 8 in long) to pull the middle of the tape tightly down on the top of the flint spring and wrap the excess tape on each side around the entire funken device staying clear of the wind up axle. Instead of duck tape I use Gorilla tape because it should last longer.

Note: when you are prying off the striker wheel from the cigarette lighter do it slowly so the spring underneath does not pop the flint away where you cannot find it.

My five Flasher rings are now all working perfectly.

If your device will not wind up (meaning that as you turn the key it prematurely unwinds) then the problem is most likely a weakened plunger button spring.

I had this happen therefore I pulled the plunger spring out from under the plunger button and then using pliers and a screwdriver I stretched the spring out a bit and then replaced that spring back under the button and then my device worked fine.

Be sure to use the flint from a Bic SLIM FLICK lighter or Scripto VIEWS lighter (do NOT buy the bic CLASSIC lighter because those flints will not fit into the funken device).

I just created a YouTube video on how to fix your flasher funken ring. This is my first truly edited video, but it has a lot of good information. To watch and hear click on the below and you may have to turn your volume up.
