Hello all. I've been registered for a while as Lord Bennington, but I've dropped the character so I wanted to be on here as myself. I'm a part-time pro who does walk-around, close-up and parlor shows. I'm a magician member of the The Academy of Magical Arts here in Los Angeles. I love mentalism and am curious why there is such bright line between mentalism and magic. I mix them in my shows and my audiences don't seem to mind Smile

Welcome (again) benkempermagic,

I mix a little Mental Magic into my show as well. I goes over very well.

I thinks Mentalists are more into preserving this line that Magicians in general but I could be wrong.

Thank you for the welcome Mary. I think you may be right about Mentalists holding the line. Good mentalism takes some acting skill, which is not the same as doing pater well. Mentalists may worry that we'll diminish their art by mixing it with a sponge bunny routine, or just look foolish if we don't play our part well. I can understand those objections.

Thanks again for the welcome.

Just remember that, when talking to mentalists that there's a HUGE difference between saying you do "mentalism" and "Mental Magic." It's a barely considered term for your average magician...but to mentalists, it's an important distinction.

There's a great group here in Penny For Your Thoughts.

Welcome!

David

Thanks for the welcome rsylvester and David. I was very lucky with that photo shoot. A good friend of mine is a photographer and needed a subject for a section on high contrast shooting for a book he just released called "Chasing the light" from Peach Pit Press. You bring up an excellent distinction David. I'll be dropping into Penny for Your Thoughts for sure.
