This week Magician David Miller previewed his new show “The Dream Dweller” here in San Francisco. (www.paradoxmagic.com)

Café Member “Magic Ian” had years ago developed a very niece cut and restored rope, I believe called “Dancing with Ropes” David, learning of the basic concept has worked on an original version as a homage to Ian’s imaginative work.

The effect is really the same as Pavel’s Super Walking Knot-- a multiple cut and restored rope that works its way from one end to the other of an 18 foot length of rope. The handling is very clean and amazingly convincing, the beauty of it is that the rope is completely 100% ungimmicked and unprepared.

Magicians have been floored by his deceptive presentation. What David has also done, which is as innovative as his routine, was to compose a very powerful, emotionally charged story about becoming caught and trapped within nightmares (with homage to the style of Docc Hilford.)

The power of straightforward magic and powerful narrative has made this a masterpiece he will open his second act with. I’ve asked, but he hesitates to video the pieces unique to him.

Magically,
Walt

In my rope lecture notes bonus material, I included my ungimmicked walking knot effect. I would love to
see what David has done. Any video?

I do both the Pavel, and the Magic Ian method. I would love to see a video of David's trick too.

Thanks for mentioning me Walt. Its nice when someone is uses my effects. Its nicer when they incorporate some of the moves within their work. I designed most of my rope magic to blend into some of the more popular rope effects both standard and avante garde.
I am working on another Parade for linking ring and will have some rope effects in there.

I believe it is my "Tango Rope", which can use "l***S" to set it up

My Tango Rope might be what he was describing.

This is Ian's version that David used as a base.
He performs so it looks almost exactly like the Pavel, but no prepared ropes.
What makes it "fantastic" is the theme/story of an escalating nightmare.

If he were to film it, it would be a private protected site, for maybe Ian to watch.
I'm waiting to see who asks about his video next... <grin>

There is a version of cut and restored on Darwin's Ency of TT that looks very similar to the walking knot, and no gimmicked rope, just a .. Smile

I would be happy to listen to Ian's evaluation of it.

John

A TT is not at the basis of my effect.
The complete routine I do just uses a scissor (no gimmick) and a rope.
-------------
The story line of an evolution of professors nightmare, is not related to the "tango" routine I do, but would be closer to the "Dances effect" which lends itself to a Prof. Nightmare evolution.
I do not blend the two effects.
----------------
There is a point where a magician can break-out of the "Dances with ropes" and go into a c&r using the "Tango" method (walking knot simulation), but is only effective using my no-gimmick method.

As Ian states, there is no gimmick (none) of any type, in this version a TT would be irrelevant in this case.

I believe that method was most practically used with a long length of ribbon, perhaps with a single cut.

Though the Pavel type effect is extremely strong, in this case an equally if not stronger story makes the piece emotionally powerful and exceptional.

I think I'll have to stop posting on this tread as I did not to be a horrid tease just get juices flowing for individual creativity.

Thanks, Walt

A ribbon makes sense and would be as effective as rope. I never anticipate that my effect would replace the strength of the Pavel effect. The intent was just to supply a subtlety for a rope cut. The "move" was developed in 1978.

Thanks,
I had two links, I assume both are equally brilliant. This thread, however, started with the Miller performance. Anyone have any luck getting a video clip, I am longing to see it.

Ian, Sorry I didn't notice the second link - and when I click on it it takes me to the "my videos" section of youtube...
