I generally press the gimmick down very slowly while I am talking and picking up the next ball. That way there is very little movement and I find it makes less noise as well.

I don't give this to examine though. The lock is too easy to find. Plus I've had a number of times where people guessed that it worked by having the smaller cup slide over to underneath the hole. Not sure how that would work but the first thing they do when I give it to them is try to slide the bottom which is a bit of a problem.
