I personally prefer Just Passing Through. I think it's a little more visual than Misled. I also think that the bonus effect Finger Through Bill is pretty cool. You can read some reviews of both Misled and Just Passing Through in the Reviews section on my site if you want. Smile

I prefer a pen through bill over a pencil through bill anyway. Many people carry pens in their pockets....how many people do you know (besides a student on his way to the SATs) that carry pencils? A pen is much more natural. If you wanna go all out with the destruction of money thing...just do torn and restored bill. It's much better than any other destrcution of money trick I've ever seen.

For those of you who prefer pen thru bill effects instead, what do you think of the Stealth Pen? It's one of the top sellers at Penguin Magic.

I've had "Mislead" for about the last 8 to 10 years and still love doing it... but just recieved "Just Passin Thru" and HAVE to say I LIKE it much better!!!

The switch of pencils makes it examinable.... and I guess you could find a source for more pencils like the ungimmicked one... just in case some pencil neck geek wants to look at it... and runs away with it!! Of course you'd still have the "good" one in a safe place!!

And... like some have said... the bonus effect of the "Finger Through Bill" is worth the price of the whole package anyway!!!

Follow up the pencile penetration (put it away!) then show how a finger works just as well... hand 'em back their dollar and you're clean!!!

GREAT job Russ!!! If only ALL magic purchases could be THIS GOOD a deal!!!

The first part of JPT can be done with the mislead gimmick. Mislead has the best effect and you can do a lot more.

I think you mean the second part of JPT can be done w/ Mislead. I like them both.

Sorry Lee, no offense there bud. The first phase of JPT is taking the pencil from the inside of the bill to the outside with a wave of your hand. I was not aware you do this with misled. If you have a method pleae PM me with it.

Well... you can do what I told you to do. I just don't want to expose anything.... If it is ok with Russ you can pm me. However, JPT is best in a close-up set and JPT will do everything Mislead can do.

How good is the JPT DVD? It is so good that the bonus routine could have been sold by itself for the price of the DVD. After seeing the bonus effect, I just sat there in shock at the cleanness of the effect and the fact that Russ had seen fit to include it on the DVD!! Definitely a 1-2 punch.

If you think the JPT pencil might draw heat, you can totally disarm an audience by following up with the bonus routine and the comment "I don't need a pencil to perform this effect, I can do it with just a bill and my finger". (Lots of patter and presentation possibilities with that line).

Of course, you can incorporate the bonus routine with Misled also---but you would first have to have bought the JPT DVD in order to get the bonus routine. So, if you are only buying one or the other (Misled v JPT), this is a no-brainer. Get JPT.

Brad,
Pretty good review. I do not totally concur with your conclusions though.

I have used Misled for years and just started using JPT. I have also used the Wonder Pen-a-tration for years more than either of the other two.

Misled and JPT look virtually the same in terms of the penetration straight down through the folded bill.

I personally never liked the first penetration in the Misled instructions. The first penetration of JPT is as equally deceptive, but not quite as visual as the second penetration in either JPT or Misled.

There are two things that set JPT apart from Misled.

I think the get ready in JPT is more motivated and smoother than it is in Misled. The put it in, pull it out, point, put it in thing is too much when compared to the smoothness of the get ready in JPT. JPT's get ready, if you can call it that, looks completely fair and innocent and is over in a flash. You are then set for the rest of the trick. No repeated handling of the pencil. JPT's handling is much smoother in that respect.

The second strong selling point of JPT is the very visual folding of the bill around the pencil. You cannot be that clean when setting up Misled. When performing JPT, there is no doubt that the pencil is inside the bill, both from the very fair wrapping move and the "show" right before the second penetration.

Misled does rate better in the more impromptu nature of the effect. Any yellow pencil can be used and the pencil does not draw attention to itself. As a stand alone impromtu effect, Misled is better.

The fact that the pencil can end clean in Misled is also a definite advantage. If performing in an informal social setting, that is an issue to be considered. People are much more likely to challenge the props in that situation. The fact that Misled ends clean is very desirable in that case.

Having performed pen thru bill penetrations for years, my experience tells me that the heat is on the bill, not the pen. I have done the wonder pen effect hundreds of times and I have rarely been challenged in a formal environment. People want to see the bill, it is supposed to be ripped and have a hole in it. They briefly look at the pen and as long as I am not running, they don't chase.

As Russ pointed out, if one incorporates the JPT pencil into their act as their closeup wand, and has it in play and handled by the spectator as part of the act, the JPT effect will go over spectacularly. I think the fair and open handling in JPT also contributes to that end.

Is that too much to do to incorporate JPT into ones repetoire? That is a personal decision. I can see many people choosing to because of the superior smoothness, handling and effect of Just Passin' Through.

I can see professionals who have years of experience in audience management not being intimidated by the prop examinability issue and wanting to incorporate JPT into their act because of the superior handling when compared to Misled.
The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance; it is the illusion of knowledge.
