With Silver flirting with $50.00 per ounce, I can't help but wonder what will happen with the Silver coin gaffs.
I have read on Lassen's blog that he is having an extremely hard time finding good coins. I also note the escalating prices on Schoolcraft's site ($475.00 for a Morgan Dean's Set).

Dealers apparently are purchasing them and melting them down for the Silver content.

I know that real Siler coins are a luxury, but once you've worked with them, it's hard to go back.

I think they will still be available, but at a higher price and perhaps with even more limited production than we see now.

Cheers,
Sammy

Sammy you said a mouthful!! Silver prices have not topped out yet and quality Silver Gaffs will keep going up in price accordingly.
What is a Silver Gaff-a-Holic to do? I just found a 3CM I had in the drawer I tried to sell for $300 last year and nobody wanted it.
Now I am glad I kept it. Not sure where the top is but if Silver goes to $100 an ounce it will be very hard for most folks to afford any high end gaffs.

Lets go with the 40% silver. Still has the look and price is reasonable.
Just try that’s all you can do , never give up .

I just sold all of my high-end gaffed silver coin sets so that I could afford gas for my car!

I hope not, but this time next year we might be looking back on $50 per ounce and thinking that was cheap.

How about a foil press for single coins and a mold to make stacks?
...to all the coins I've dropped here

Not quite the same look. I love Walking Liberty Halves. I do have a number of rolls of 40% Kennedys that I bought many years ago.

I am fortunate that I have purchased most of what I would use over the years, but as new gaffs are created, and if I want them, price and availability will probably be a factor.

I wish I'd invested in high end gaffs years ago. I'm looking to buy the Triception set and I'm worried if I wait any longer I'll have to take out a mortgage to afford it.

This is a good topic. I have a gaffed stack of Morgans that cost around $300. I was thinking that there may come a time when the silver in the coins may be worth more than the price of the trick.

Some think that silver is going to keep going up. I think that both silver and gold prices are too high. I think that in the next 5-10 years silver will be back down to less than $20/oz. I certainly hope so at least.

My Dad is wanting to sell his massive coin collection and I'm begging him to hang onto it - he has some beautiful Morgans and Walkers, among other nice pieces. One of his Morgan dollars, from the 1880s, is worth about $500 on its own. I think he needs to give the collection to me, personally.

There are some that think silver will hit the $300-$400/oz range. I highly doubt it though.

I think it will peak at under $100. Like I said, I hope I'm proven wrong.

Bernanke just said that he's going to keep the spigots open for a while yet:
http://blogs.wsj.com/economics/2011/04/2......ference/

With Gold up 29.4% and Silver up 153.8% in the last 52 weeks as a result of past actions by the fed, I guess we can expect more increases in our future.

I think magicians will continue to buy silver gaffs. But, at least for a while, those who may have purchased more than one or two of a favorite gimmicked coin set will probably settle for just one. I had five Triple Threats at one time. I'm sure others have made similar purchases ( you know who you are ).

That should be a crime, if it's not. Those coins are part of our history.

JUST A THOUGHT....

Yes, Silver is nice, gorgeous actually but unless someone is a "coin colector" the average spectator only sees "coins"..period....

Yes, I know as a professional, I should work with professional tools yada, yada, yada I suppose silver being one of them....BUT....

As a semi amateur and not making that $400.00 a show payday, It would be a good thing if someone could make a "stamped gaff like kranzos half shell or a better shell from those "asian" morgan dollars that are sold inexpensively.....

So in looking at the price of silver as it continues to increase, do you think it would be wise to hang on to silver coins, assuming that silver will continue to increase? Are we going to see it peak at some point, and if so, where?

I ask because I wanna buy a yacht, and that 1889 Morgan dollar is my ticket to the down payment. Or, if all goes well, my ticket to the whole boat.

You ask the question that plagues all investors: When do I sell? Silver reached $50.00 an ounce in the early '80's, then crashed. Admittedly, the reason it's rising now is different, but the outcome could likely be the same.

I certainly wouldn't put all my eggs into 1889 Morgan dollars.

I can't believe that the silver in a complex shelled gaff will ever be worth more than what you paid for the gaff. You paid for the 2,3 or 4 silver coins needed to make something that now contains the silver of little more than a single coin. I wonder if the Gaff makers have a way to salvage the shaveings and reduce their costs.
