Bless you Buzz!
Blueshawk, I agree basswood isn't too expensive yet. I used spruce since it was a first attempt R/D and didn't want to use any of the basswood I already have as I use it for duck decoy's and other carvings I make. I was being cheap I guess. Also none of the basswood I have is wide enough and I did not want to glue any up as I would have had to joint it by hand with a handplane. There I was being lazy. There was a local sawmill where I used to purchase basswood in planks 4 to 10 inches wide by 2 to 6 inches thick and varying lengths but the are now out of business and I haven't found any other nearby sawmills that have any basswood currently. I have located several suppliers on the net yet haven't tried any yet. Basswood in craft stores and from wood carving supply houses is I feel way too expensive. Where were you able to find the basswood plank you purchased? The days of basswood in the lumber yards appears sadly to be long gone. |

That's why I went and bought more basswood even though I had a supply already, because I also use it for other non-vent woodcarvings as well.
But more importantly than that, where I was living, I knew where I could go buy planks of it, and didn't know how long it would take me to find a source here. Like you say, it is getting more difficult. The place I was getting it was a lumber yard/home improvement store, the only one in the area that carried, in stock, all the better woods. I'm going to miss having that source. I know what you mean about the craft stores, besides being too expensive, all you can really usually get from them are small blocks that might be okay for small woodcarvings, but kind of worthless for much else unless you want to glue a dozen blocks together. I haven't really checked the woodcarving supply houses, but have no problem expecting that to be expensive, just the cost of shipping alone.... Yes, I'm not looking forward to when I use up what I got and have to go looking for more. You were probably wise to spare the basswood for R/D, I was spoiled, I had the ready source of basswood available to me from the first.

Manal,
I have purchased basswood from http://www.hardwoodemporium.com/ They are located in Elizabeth, PA. prices were reasonable with the shipping for this area. Tom |

There you go manal, right in your own state, shipping won't be bad for you.
I'll have to check later and see how bad it would be for me in case I can't find a local source by the time I need more.

I worked two 12 hour shifts this weekend 7 PM to 7AM and haven't slept yet but hope to work on the figure tonight after a nap. |

Thanks manal;
Thanks Manal; Since shortly after I started the Magic and Ventriloquism business it was my intention to focus my performances for non-profit shows to be performed at no charge; this would have fit very nicely into my corporate mission definition The only reason I can think of without asking is that during the summer months the chapter has no plans for any events involving children and they have no interested in planning an event. |

Hey manal - how goes the project?
I'm still a long way from being able to get my shop set up, so I have to live vicariously through hearing about other's projects.

The head and headstick are completed and functional. My son plays with it a lot and it is proving to be very durable.
I have put the building of the body and carving of the hands and feet on hold as my wifes sewing machine is temporarily out of service and my days are currently very filled with caring for my son. We have also been busy preparing for our trip to Ohio. We are going to receive our sons service dog and attend the 10 days of handling and training required. We have been looking forward to this for almost 3 and 1/2 years and hope it will greatly improve the quality of his life. When we get back and Derek once again starts school I will again be happily busy carving and building. Hope you get your shop set up soon blueshawk. |

It sounds like you do have a lot going on. Congrats on the soon-to-be service dog (I looked at the site in your signature), I hope he proves to be a great friend for your son.
Glad to hear the head is all completed with no major roadblocks. Glad to hear you're also planning on carving the hands, a carved figure should have carved hands(IMHO). I don't much care for the look of most of the molded hands being used anyway, too realistic and end up looking more fake than carved hands, and for some reason, they often look too big for the figures they are on. Yes, I am hoping to be able to set up in the near future. The wood is leaning against the wall next to the door that goes from the garage to the kitchen, so I get to see it sitting there waiting every time I go somewhere. I have a completed small carved figure head and hands here, but no body, etc. I couldn't even work on any cast figures, molds are all over the place, might find the front of one and the back of another....and the casting material and mold release is where? Not only that, but every time I go to do something around the house, I can't find the tools I need, and I know I have them, I just don't know where they are in the Bermuda triangle of boxes I have stacked for the workshop area. aaarrrggh!

Better half? C'mon, we only say that when they are where they can hear us, otherwise we tell the truth....
After my last couple posts, I've been thinking about going ahead and taking time out to try and get that area set up. Of course, it doesn't actually mean I'll get to work on any projects, but I can have the illusion of being able to. And as a cover, I can say I really need to get the workshop organized so I can find the tools I need to do stuff around the house - which actually would also be a very good thing for me.

Tonight I worked about a half hour jointing some basswood blanks to glue up for another head. Have to use a hand plane and a jack plane at that as I loaned out my 2 long jointing all wood antique planes 6 years ago and they never found their way back:) I still have quite a bit to do yet. I no longer loan out tools. |

Hmmmm, yes, I've learned my lesson about loaning tools as well. Either the tools not making their way back to me, or coming back in not near the same condition, or power tools not working, or not working right......

Tonight I finished jointing and planing by hand six pieces of very clear / dry /stable/fine grained basswood and glued them up into 2 carving blanks which will eventualy become 1 figure head. Making long paper thin shavings was somehow enjoyable but it took far to long.
This particular wood I have had for 15 years and have carted it along through 8 moves. I won't actually begin carving until sometime after Aug 12th as we leave Monday to get my sons service dog and won't be back until after the 12th. For anyone wondering the dog is half Labrador Retriever and half Bloodhound. 4Paws e-mailed us her picture yesterday and she is a beaut. |

When we made this last move, we got rid of a lot of stuff, and still had to leave a few things when we were loading the truck from running out of room. But my basswood, (and the pine I had for bodies), that definitely was getting on the truck no matter what. If you see this before you go, have a safe trip - if you don't see it until after, I hope you had a good trip.

Kind of left this thread behind. I did finish the head however I painted the hair instead of wigging it. As it was an R/D project I wanted to keep the cost down.
I never did build a body as I was busy with other duties and wanted to get started on a basswood head which I have begun carving just a few days ago. |
