Doug, regardless of how long you have been in magic, we are currently in an age of exposure. See all those banner ads littered throughout these pages? That's hardly 'secret keeping' is it. The question becomes one of when is it exposure and when is it a magician helping/selling magicians? What's the difference? Paying?
Maxfield suggests that if someone sells their secret it becomes fair game but contrasts this to googling a method. How is that different? If the personal sells his secret then it's available to anyone with a credit card, and there is nothing to prevent them from doing with that information as they see fit - including dropping clues to the method on the Café or outright exposure on the Internet or repackaging the trick and selling it on their own. While we may give lip service in protest to these actions, can we really do more than that since we live in and foster a culture of exposure. Think of how many people get vehemently upset when a creator tries to limit access to their material, or put in place measures to protect it? We even see people go nuts when someone puts a high price on their products. You can easily find posts from people justifying theft because they feel creators should not charge so much. Look at the Café after a televised magic special. It tingles with people actively trying to deconstruct tricks. Suggest this may be unethical or just not in the best interest of magic and you will find the hive agitated. Heck, speculation as to methods is even encouraged by Café decree in the latest and greatest section. In short, magicians only care about secrets when it's 'their' secret. If it's a secret they use, it's exposure. If it's someone else's, it's educational. |
