I have been doing children's shows for a couple of years. I use very basic tricks because the magic is only a part of the show. I would like to move into a larger show for kids and just do magic. So, I have purchased more tricks. I already own a bunny so I want to use it in the show. However, I bought a duck pan and the rabbit is too big. Any suggestions for a relatively inexpensive way to produce a larger rabbit?

A rabbit pan?
You know why don't act naive.

I cannot find such a thing. Do you know who makes it and have you used one. I found a super pan but they are not made anymore and they are costly.

Go to http://searchthemagiccafe.com and look for words like rabbit or livestock and produce or production. There's also a specific forum here that deals with animals.

How about pulling the rabbit out of a hat? Maybe you could wear one of those "Cat In The Hat" style hat or whatever your character would wear.
You could pull the rabbit out of a square circle. It doesn't cost much to make your own, that way you can size it to the rabbit. Iven

Thanks all. I got a new rabbit pan on order and it should work. I also have a bunch of thick large hankies which I may try and if all else fails, I will try a square circle, something similar or just eat the rabbit during the show. Although I don't know how well that would go over at a kids' party.

Hi toonerific;
If you are planning on using your rabbit in your routine, I was wondering of you have, or are going to get a USDA permit? It’s not hard to obtain and only cost $40.00, using a rabbit without a permit is a costly fine. If you want further information PM me Buzz |

Buzz,
I did not know I needed one. Thank you for letting me know. I will get all necessary permits and insurance to make my show legal. |

Yes, not many people know about the permit; I was required to obtain the same permit that Ringling Brothers Circus.
I understand that the fine for using a rabbit without a USDA permit may be as much as $2,500.00. |

Does that go for other domestic animals like Dove's, Dogs?

A U.S.D.A. permit to make a rabbit appear in a magic show. Why does this not surprise me? In the 70's and 80's we did shows with live animals, we cleaned rugs house to house (for $30 each for a shampooed rug), we knocked doors without fear.
Now we have to have a "permit" to do this, "Licensed, Bonded & Insured" to do that, and now we are told to "never knock on a stranger's door!". Maine is one of the last states to do this. I never had a problem until recently. Florida as well. Well, there are reasons for these new laws. Things happen! California? Yeah, I might watch everything I do there. Florida? Yep, 'fraid so. Now Maine. Performing at all my need some kind of permit in most states, now. Busking in Bangor got really ugly a few months back, and I won't repeat those mistakes. Ha! Not me! And thank you, Buzz, for bringing this up! We are not in the 70's any more, fellow magi... Doug |

Your welcome Doug; It’s a federal regulation, not just California. The city of San Francisco, requires a permit for busking.
Irossall; Dogs, yes, you are required to acquire a permit; Doves, performer’s are not required a permit; well not this week. My procedure was simple; I needed to take my rabbit to a vet and have paperwork completed. A USDA Veterinarian visited my home and inspected the area I keep my rabbit, I passed with flying colors. I submitted my $40.00 and a permit was issued. I must say that for a Federal Agency, the people I communicated with were all extremely professional and helpful. In this case it is easier to have a permit than to try to avoid it; it’s not a pain and the ramifications of using a rabbit in a performance without having a permit may be very costly. |

Toonerific;
Allow me to further complicate the issue of using a rabbit in your performance. I added this section to my confirmation letter making sure that I am covered for any incident occurring during my performance. A child’s reaction to fur can be very serious to the point that it may escalate and result in death. This is the wording I added: Bunnies are a lot of fun at children’s parties and I enjoy performing with my bunny. This is to inform you that a live rabbit is incorporated as a part of the magical show, please advise all adults attending and parents of children attending the show of the bunny appearing during the routine; to keep it a magical surprise please do not reveal the rabbit’s appearance to the child. I have disclosed either by email, in this memo and on the telephone the appearance of a live rabbit at the event and cannot be responsible for a hypersensitivity reaction due to allergies to the live bunny during the routine; all adults and parents of children release me, from any and all responsibility or liability to any child’s reactions that might be sustained while attending or in any way participating in the party. |
