"Think of a number between 1 and 10."
Now look deep in their eyes, pretend to read their minds. "Was it a five?" "No." "I knew it!" (That last line needs to be said in a "See, I got you" type of way. The whole thing really depends on how you present it, which in turn depends on your personality.) Nine times out of ten, it goes over as a very good gag. Once in 10 times, you're a miracle worker... I hope this doesn't count as exposure... it's hardly a trick... |

For a truly impromptu effect, I borrow a coin and make it pass through my fists, teleporting from one hand to another. After that, I try to find paper and something to write with to do a triple prediction. This way, I don't have to carry anything with me.
Of course I can never leave the house without a deck of cards. For some reason, it's more necessary than taking my wallet. Must be an obsession or something...

I just read about David Berglas in a recent issue of Magic Magazine, and he has some very nice subtleties on using the Magician's Choice in an impromptu party setting that are excellent. I've started using it, and it has blown people away. Totally impromptu, you borrow everything, and if it's done right the specs are amazed. I think it's the November 2002 issue. Check it out!

I'd recommend to anyone to spend the time learning some basic coin sleights, nothing is more impromtu than making a coin vanish and reappear in someones pocket.
Failing that, psychokinetic times is always a killer if presnted properly, or a non-center tear style of trick

Kenton Knepper's Kolossal Killer is one I always have on me...This is just great. All you need is your wallet in your pocket, that you normally carry with you. Just great.

Some good coin sleights are good impromptu tricks... almost everyone has change on them and it makes the tricks that much more convincing when you can use an audience member's own coins.

Ok, I do a lot of street magic so I always have to have something on me, so I use the most normal props toothpicks, rubberband's, my finger's, stuff like that. Ask yourself this, does an average joe carry card's with him?

Personally, I think real impromptu depends largely on who you are, your occupation and your environment.
For a office worker the impromptu work might include ungimmicked paper clips, elastics, a calculator, etc. What would a roofer use? Maybe a piece of rope, bend a nail?? It's all different for everyone. A magician who normally carries and uses gimmicked props is NOT doing impromptu magic. This might be called "seemingly" or "apparent" impromptu but it's not impromptu to me. Now if they borrow an item and don't use their props (TT, ITR, etc.) then that's what I call real impromptu. What's you opinion? |

The Hundy 500 The Two Dollar Window The Wonderland Dollar I also turn a regular dollar into a mismade dollar These bill tricks are always with me and if I ever run short on cash I can spend some of the money from the Hundy 500. |

I always have coins and a TT. with 2 scarves. Not so impromptu but a great follow up to the impromptu!

Two of my favorite impromtu tricks with a deck of cards are - Twisting The Aces and Dr. Daley's Last Trick.
One hundred percent of the shots you don't take don't go in - Wayne Gretzky
My favorite part is putting the gaffs in the spectators hands...it gives you that warm fuzzy feeling inside! - Bob Kohler |

I can usually get away with the 1089 trick and a book test.
make them look at page 10, the 8th line down ant the ninth word accross which of course you know. What makes this impromptu is the fact that most people seem happy with you casually flicking through the book at the beginning. I then ask them if they want to know how I did it and when they say yes I say that I have memorised the book and rely on people having it in their homes!! |

I would say Impromptu Magic is...
A magician with great creativity and well educated in tricks that's creates an illusion just from a request from a person. The trick may be from ordinary things that was taken from a spectator or from the surrounding environment or a cleverly set-up rig but the effect should be surprising to be able to produce a believable impromptu effect. Now I say well educated meaning a beginner who just learned the the Coin Bite trick to do an impromptu magic. For one he will just do the same trick over and over again? Number two, I guess you are more or less known to do magic to be asked to do magic in an instance. Now this is just my opinion. Now this is what I said in a similar thread.. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=41
